Dumb clamshell cowl question

Hi-

I just purchased a 57 Evinrude 5.5 Fisherman. Here's my dumb question- In trying to take off the clamshell cowl, there does not seem to be enough wiggle room to get the side by the gearshift lever off. Do I need to remove the gearshift lever in order to remove the cowl?

Thanks in advance for any help.

it takes a little pressure but it will come off. or take the lever off.

Put the lever in reverse. There should be enough wiggle room to get it off. Maybe your lever is bent? Happens from laying the motor on the gearshift side and bouncing it around in the back of a pickup truck.

Yeah, that was what I was going to suggest. I have to put my 10 hp in gear to get it to unbuckle. Believe my 18 was the same way but not sure.

Isn't that shift lever spring loaded? I know on some, you can pry it out slightly with a screw driver and flip it down and out of the way.

I haven't looked at any 50s ERudes, other than my Bigtwins, in a lot of years ... do they have the machine screws on the starboard side, like the bigtwins do?

PS: Just found a pic of a '55 7.5hp Erude - it does have the screws that I'm talking about. Look for them on yours. If they are there, there will be a pair of them and they should be obvious.

PS2: Found another pic - this time of a '57 5.5 hp. I don't see the screws on that one, so you may not have them either. I'll leave all this info up, however, because people with the 7.5s may read it some time in the future and benefit.

All of the above are correct---sort of. Here is the real skinny on the subject. The subject motor we are talking about is a 1957 5.5hp. Not a 10 or 18 or whatever.

The screwed-on starboard side was on the 1954 models, and 1955 got rid of the screws. So that is not an issue here. The pull-out-and-flip-down handle was on SOME models, like the 10hp. But it was NOT on the 1957 5.5hp. Lastly, the handle cannot be removed from a 5.5hp. It is cast as an integral part with the shaft that goes through the exhaust housing.

Which brings us back to my first post. Put it in reverse, and there should be enough room to get the hood off. Unless the handle is bent inward toward the hood. In that case, you have a problem.

Thanks for the replies. I've put it in reverse and it still is just shy of coming off. Seems to be hanging up on something in the front so there isn't wiggle room to pass by the gear shift. I'll have to muck about with it more. Thanks!

"And on the eighth day, He figured out how to get the cover off of a '57 Evinrude 5.5hp motor!"

"Verily I say unto you, push the gear shift back some more!"
