Re: Dude, Where's My Civil War?

I am unaware of what the NY times printed. If they printed there is a Civil War, I would agree that was premature. However, our current administration is concerned with the possibility of a civil war, regardless of what this reporter says.

What I find interesting though, is many discount news that conflicts with their beliefs, but completely buy in when a reporter says what they want to hear.

Also, I agree Boom, he did. :p

CJY,

I don't discount anything. If it doesn't make sense to me I usually dig deeper. If it still doesn't make sense, then I chuck it. Other than the timing of a potential civil war, what part of his observations do you feel should be chucked?

Something that made a lot of sense to me in that article is the point the guy makes about the Iraqi's learning that the press pays for bad news not good. I just thought that pointing out some good news might help you see the other side of things as well :p

Positive news is good for us. Anybody know how many people die from reading or hearing bad news? Bad news is a plot to lower world population. The networks are in on it.

Yep CJY, it is amazing how people ignore news that doesnt line up with their beliefs.

I dont think anyone is saying it is a all roses in Iraq. It is just good to hear something that isnt negative. Everything in the world that has to do with the US isnt bad, believe it or not.

Re: Dude, Where's My Civil War?

I am so glad to hear the Iraqis are greeting us a liberators, with flowers and such...
I think we would have preferred to that happen prior to losing the 2000+ troops, however.

And I would like to hear what Bob Woodruff, the ABC news anchor, or the other however many hundreds of other journalists that have been killed or mained would say when they learned the streets of Baghdad were completly safe for journalists. And I hope this guy would interrupt his pick-up soccer game long enough to find Jill Carroll and bring her back.

Hey, I really hope this guy is accurate. I hope we have turned the corner in Iraq, we can welcome *ALL* our troops home very soon, and we all can live happily ever after.

No American wants a civil war in Iraq, and this lib resents the implication that we do, or that somehow questioning this administration is unpatriotic. I guess when you don't have any facts or evidence going for you, it's logical to resort to name-calling.

At any rate, I hope this guy turns out to be correct. I really do. Color me hopeful, but skeptical.

Wow PW . . . I just want to make sure 'cause I'm getting a mixed message. You hope he's telling the truth, and all that other stuff is in case he isn't

Re: Dude, Where's My Civil War?

When all the hard evidence suggests the reality is not as he says, and all the other reports from all other reporters paint a completely different picture, then yes I am a touch skeptical. Yes there are reporters that sometimes have an agenda. Not all reporters have all the same agenda.

Yes I wish it were true.

I just have my doubts.

How is that a mixed message?

Twidget, did you read the article? This reporter is making it sound pretty "rosey." He went so far as to make a sarcastic statement in his title, as though a civil war in Iraq is rediculous. We all know it's a concern, including our current administration.

Yep CJY, it is amazing how people ignore news that doesnt line up with their beliefs.
Furthermore, I never discounted what this reporter said, except that all involved believe the possibility of a civil war is a concern, regardless of what this reporter viewed. Question: if all is so safe according to this reporter, Why is he traveling with armed troups..hmmmm?

QC, I am not saying you should "chuck" anything. We all have to pick and choose what we buy and don't buy. Why do you think he is traveling with armed forces? American troups were all around. Ever heard the phrase, "while the cat's away, the mice will play." I wonder if things are as peaceful when American troups are elsewhere.

Surely you're not referring to the anti-war libs? You mean the pro-war libs, right? ;)

For the record, ALTA I advocated maintaining a permanent military base in Iraq.

Re: Dude, Where's My Civil War?

I understand your doubts PW, you just seemed really angry in your first post which didn't make sense to me.

CJY, There have been a small number of similarly "rosey" reports, but they don't make the news etc. Balanced reporting is what I want. If I got all my news from the local TV news I wouldn't live in greater L.A. Most people out of state that I speak to (post with) think I live in a hell hole. First hand, I wouldn't live anywhere else except possibly Australia . . .

Re: Dude, Where's My Civil War?

I sometimes get frustrated when I read about the deaths of Iraqis and Americans every day. I am sure there are good things happening as well, that don't get as much press.

I have no idea whether we are in, or on the brink, or going to avoid a civil war. I have no idea. I hope we can somehow avoid it.

But I do know that there are lots of people out there willing to pay lots of money for reports they for whatever reason want to hear. Capitalism being what it is, it is not surprising when someone steps up and fills that market void.

And this reporter may well have found some specific area in Iraq where at a particular time it was all rosy and safe--I have no idea...But unless the military is lying to us as well, there are Iraqis and American soldiers, as well as reporters, getting killed and maimed over there every day.

Now you can argue it is all worth it and it is a noble cause and such and I can accept that argument (Not agree with it, of course, but at least accept it as honest) But to suggest that all the other reporters are cowards and lying about the risks is simply too much for me to take.

And I get really angry when the political opposition is portrayed as somehow hoping for a civil war over there for some political advantage.
This is not about political advantage. Real people are dying over there every day.

From long before this war began, I predicted this outcome, as did others. I hoped I was wrong. I was not. That fact is little consolation as I too love my country. It is why I consistenty criticize what I consider missteps.

There, I will get off my soapbox for now!
