A little update here.
Zim the Israeli container shipping company has supported the DPI bid for management of 6 US harbours.
This goes to show that in the world of trade not everything is as in the world of politics.

Just have to overcome Arabphobia and Islamphobia. Nobody even frowned when the British company was running the ports.

Yep, and the same people screaming that we should not be profiling people are the ones that started the DPW deal. From the start it was sounding like profiling to me. Yea, just a mini rant.

What are they gonna do when it's widely made known that another UAE firm is about to purchase a British company that supplies sensitive military engine parts to BOEING and PRATT & WHITNEY???

I kinda liken the whole deal to people worried about the hiring of a ship's Captain and his background. When the ship itself is leaky, the life jackets are rotting and there are not enough lifeboats for the passengers.

I just can not imagine that the dubai company would spend 8 billion to support terrorism, if 1 event occurs then they will simply take the ports away and sell them to someone else.

I can not imagine them walking away from 8billion.

Plus you would have to replace all of the long shoreman which is not easy task in itself.

tomatolord

Re: Dubai Ports International.

I have to admit I am of mixed feelings regarding this port deal.

On the one hand, we need to do a better job at port security and inspect a larger percent of shipments generally. That has nothing to do with the Dubai company, and everything to do with properly manning the CG and homeland security, etc...

On the other hand, how can you not share general security info with the port operator, and do we really want that information on someone's computer in Dubai? Or the UK, for that matter.

It is of course the problem in politicising the whole issue of security, with threats of mushroom shaped clouds, and the Patriot act and NSA spying and all the other things that the powers that be have decided it's a great idea to scare us all in thinking they and they alone know how to keep us safe... When fear rules, rational analysis tends to take a back seat.

The bottom line to me is the "golden rule". He who has the gold makes the rules. It's usually like that with billion dollar mergers and takeovers. Doesn't matter what me the small guy thinks or feels. Big business and government always rules with an iron fist.

Wow Kagee, it's almost like you are using a metophor of the baby bush ruled America being that ship. Do not think that I am saying it is so, or that America is that ship. But one could almost make the connection between your analogy and the liberal view (and to a lesser extent the reality) of the current state of America.

As for the ports deal, Britain has been our Ally for years, UAE has not. History has proved out many times over that the Middle East region is extremely unstable. With terrorist and insurgents in Iraq coming from all areas of the Muslim and Arab world, we can't be too vigilant in our skepticism and guard for America's safety, HERE AT HOME! As in so many times before, if the bush adminsitration ahd been up front and honest with America, and provided us with information and truth, this probably would be a non-issue. But as it has demonstated so many times, the bush admin disregards the average American as to stupid to be considered in any action or operation by the government.

Just like with the racial profiling after 9-11, what else are we to do. After 9-11 we were considering only arab men because we were not attacked by Japanese, Chinese, Swedes, French, Mexican or Baltic people. We were attacked by Arabic men. So get of the "moral" high- horse. When you have such a narrowly defined enemy, you regard all of similar characteristic with great skepticism. Or else you are defeated, in your own bed.

Hmmmmmm? Why does your ilk protest so vehemently when that same wisdom is employed in our inner cities or when it is employed at our own airport terminals?

I'll answer that for you DLM. Libs are infamous for situational ethics. It is bad if it does not fit the liberal agenda. It is good if it does fit the liberal agenda of the moment.

Not enough time to research adequately and provide an educated response. I just don't know. I know I don't think anything presented by ANYONE adds up in my mind.

But I don't think that by awarding this contract to a domestic firm would be of any benefit. Look at who we hire as teachers, listen to the words they say, and see how many support their hate. With this in mind, I don't see an advantage to domestic control of the ports. The rest, I don't know.

Personally I think this whole thing is/was Congressional racism. I don't get it

Also, I thought showing trust to the Muslim world was a good thing. I understand PW's point about info on the computers, but why do we allow Emirates Airlines to land A340s in New York? It would seem much easier to just have a state employed pilot fly one into anything the UAE wanted him to. You only need one or two people to pull that deal off. I am actually disappointed. I was hoping the rest of the world would see that we are fair. Not stupid, but fair.

What Boomer said about situational ethics. If it is an opportunity to attack the administration and arouse public ire against GWB, then do it.

Get votes, and to the devil with truth.

What are going to do after DPW did the honorable thing and backed out, but they sell to the real evil "haliburton". Thanks Chuck Shumer

Shumer may have been very vocal but both the House and Senate leadership went to the WH today and warned Bush that his veto would be overridden. They all need our thanks.

DPW? Is that Department of Public Works?
