Re: DSC Enabled VHF Radios

My experience was that the coast guard were not monitoring the DSC output ie position etc so you should check in your location if its worth it .....
Since you can't buy a new fixed VHF marine radio without DSC in the United States, for those of us here that's a moot point. Besides, other boaters will be able to pick up distress calls even if the Coast Guard does not for some reason.

The USCG radio watchstanders have DSC capability. The USCG does not maintain a radio watch in inland areas. The USCG maintains a radio watch along the coastline of the USA and on the Great Lakes. If you are in Iowa, you should not expect the USCG to be maintaining a radio watch on Channel 16 for a distress call. However, other boats with DSC radios will receive DSC distress calls.

As more recreational boats become equipped with DSC radios, there will be more DSC radios listening for distress calls everywhere.

I've had a DSC radio tied into my GPS/Chartplotter for 3 years now. I wish some of my boating friends would get on the ball and do the same!

Careful Skargo, everyone having DSC might just ruin the "Boating the Upper Chesapeake" thread

No more "how do you get to" questions, just look at your chart plotter. LOL

True. I want to be able to see my buddies on my chartplotter though!

This is DSC, not AIS. For others to get your position, they would need to know your MMSI and with your radio set to not auto-acknowledge, it's your decision to give your position. Position polling between you and your buddies does not give others your position.

Ummm, that's exactly what we want to do, and are going to do, without AIS....http://www.myboatsgear.com/newsletter/2008919.asp

Yes, but freelancer seems to be worried about people getting your position from DSC when you don't want them to know your position, or maybe I'm not understanding his post. This is not an issue with DSC unless they already know your MMSI and your radio is set for auto-ack. With DSC you are not broadcasting your position like you would be with an AIS transponder. With DSC, only those you want to know your position will get it, while all others will not. At least not with their DSC VHF. There are other ways to decode DSC packets.

Eric, your are correct, only others that you allow to know your position (outside of the "other ways" that you refer to) will know your position and that knowledge requires an exchange of information.

I was merely trying to interject a little humor:facepalm:...if you scan through the 140 pages of posts in the "Boating the Upper Chesapeake" thread, you'll see many posts from Iboaters inquiring about nice spots to swim, beach, fish etc.
The thought was, that maybe some of that discourse would go away if everyone had DSC and already could see where you were in the Bay;)
