My names Mike,I have a 1986 John.9.9. I just rebulit the power head on a newley acguried Sailmaster because the previous owner toasted it. I went through the cooling system and cleared it. New thermastat, new impeler, new copper water tube to power head. I started enging first time in tank got plenty of water to pee hole, but none from upper exaust hole. So put on water hose and got none from lower exaust. When I hold my finger over pee hole I get water spray from exaust. When I take it off it stops I also get a stream of water from a hole on the lower unit port side

Re: Dry exaust

Not sure from here,Mike...But it is acting like a sticky t-stat. The thermostat may not be the right one, or not opening when at the proper heat. Run the engine 5 minutes while monitoring the telltale water temp with your hand. It should open when the temp gets almost too hot to place your hand in.
I hope this is the problem anyway.

Re: Dry exaust

Most housings have a teflon coating on them. As long as the underlying aluminum is not pitted badly, it should be fine. But you are correct that the housing can devour a new impeller if it is in bad shape.
Ither way, replace the impeller regardless of the old one's condition. If thew old one looks pretty good, go ahead and keep it in the repair box for a spare.
Like someone here said last week (don't rmembr who), " Impellers look fine until they fail".

Thanks for the replies, I went back to the the t-stat an took a hard look at it, turns out that its opening fine, I just was being to cautious and was not letting it warm up enough to open. thanks again.
