Re: Drum Cable Steering

Don't do any surgery to the handle tabs. On my 57 Evinrude Big Twin 35 hp I use a bolt with a big fender washer and wingnut on the backside. Leave the tabs in place...someday you may come across another bracket with the spring-loaded bolt on it that will need those tabs.

Re: Drum Cable Steering

I'm glad I found this thread.

I have a 14 ft fiberglass that I need to redo the cable and drum steering on.

Re: Drum Cable Steering

Great thread ... Thanks, very helpful on my 14 footer steering. All the cables were cut before I got it.

cables down each side

Are you sure the diagram is right? i mean, you wrote it, I know that much from your post. When running down opposite sides of the boat The cable needs to depart from the steering pulley on the same side, not opposite sides as depicted in your diagram. If you were to lace your system up that way you would have a locked up system that just didn't steer. Per your diagram, You would not be able to turn the steering wheel clockwise and when you turn the steering wheel counter-clockwise the engine would flop about and the cable would undoubtedly come off the spool.

Did you read the entire thread, or just start in the middle? The diagram is correct. When spooled correctly, the wire comes off the center of the drum, not opposite ends. Go back and study the pictures, and put 'em together with the diagram.

Please do not drag up old posts; look at the announcement at the top of the forum. I really doubt that you'll get an answer from tash on this post. Yes, the diagram is correct. The top and bottom of the drum are wound opposite of one another; when the wheel is turned the cable will come off of the bottom and into the top, and vice-versa.

Re: Drum Cable Steering

Tash, I'm new here but I'mhaving the same issue with my steering. My cable broke, luckily when I was just idling, and I'm installing the new cable. I'm looking at your diagram and something doesn't look right. It seems to me that if i feed the cable like you have it in the diagram, the cable would be pulling against itself at the motor and not allow it to turn at all. Shouldn't the cables cross at the "top" of the pulley so when you turn the wheel they pull either left or right? Am I just looking at this worng?

Again, please do not drag up old posts. You will not receive a reply from Tash on this, but the diagrams are correct. The cable is wound opposite directions on the drum so when the when the wheel is turned one cable goes out while the other one goes is pulled in.
