I have a 1960 Johson 75HP Super Sea Horse. I am trying to drop the lower unit and when i unbolt all the bolts it drops down but something is holding it from completely disassembling. Any ideas what is holding it in there?

The shift rod. Put a couple bolts back in to hold it, un do the shift rod, then take the bolts back out. It should slide down.

Tke the inspection plate off the side of the midsection. You will find another plate inside behind that one. Take that one off and you will see the shift rod connector inside. Completely remove the lower bolt from it.

When you put it back together, use a flashlight ot peer in there and make sure the notch in the shift rod is exactly aligned with the bolt hole before installing the bolt. If you don't and the bolt rubs on the edge of the notch in the shift rod it will wipe the threads off the bolt every time. Then it will fall out 5 miles from shore, never at dockside.
