Drop lower unit on Johnson

Im dropping the lower unit on a Johnson 225 1995 it drops 1 inch and then won't move anymore can anyone tell me why this is happening or does the shifter need to be in gear I had thumping going on and small metal pcs come out does this sound trashed to anyone also water got in

Did you disconnect the shift linkage under the carbs?

The small bolt holding linkage under the carbs that's what holds the shift shaft or lower unit from dropping

Well, if I've ever heard a description of "trashed" I'd say the part about pieces of metal falling out would fit the bill. At this point it sounds like your best bet would be to locate a used, serviceable lower unit.

Does not sound promising. Did you remove the bolt under the fin ???

If the l/u drops 1", one could assume the bolt under the fin is out. I vote for the shift linkage.
