Driveshaft removal

How difficult is it to replace the driveshaft on 86 Johnson?
I picked up a used lower unit and the splines look damaged or worn.
I would like to swap them if possible.

Not sure how well it shows in the photo. The leading edge on all the splines are worn.
What would cause this? Can I still use it in this condition?

Don't use it as it may damage your crank shaft splines. G/C will have to come apart to change it. Prob could have been no grease or something misaligned.
