A motorist drove for 60 miles at speeds of 135mph after the accelerator on his BMW car jammed and his brakes failed (BBC News)

Full story here

I liked his quote......"I was in tears most of the time on the phone to the police - I really could see myself dying," like yeah, I think I'd be thinking the same myself Sherlock!

Oh well, anyone want to buy a second-hand BMW before it gets posted on fleabay? :D :D

Ps: my first thought was "why not just turn the ignition key off?" anyone know why that wouldn't have worked?

I posted something similar to this on doc side chat many moons ago. Idiots think of the cell phone first, then idiot 911 operators dont tell them to turn off the key.

What is wrong with these people????

Ken

Too many people think that turning off the engine is the same as jumping on the brakes because they just don't know anything about thier car, turn the key, if it goes, great, if not, call the dealer. It never ceases to amaze me how many people are technology impaired. I've encountered folks with degrees who have trouble operating a paper clip. :)

That is pretty funny, helicopter chase, the brakes smoking, may never drive again, BMW quote . . . LOL

He did say he tried neutral, but at least half an hour and he doesn't think of the key . . . Doh!

Re: Driver survives 135mph speeds without brakes!

It is so easy to say, "I'd turn off the key." Just like in any situation it is so much easier to say what you would do, but you never really know what you will do when actually in that situation. With that said, and being a mechanic I can say that I think I would be of sound enough mind in that panic situation to eventually turn off the key.

If you are ever faced with a situation like this, or any situation where you think turning off the key would be the right answer, be very careful and mindful that just turning off the key will not stop you like full functioning brakes. When you kill the engine you lose power assist for steering and eventually for braking. True the engine will still be spinning due to engine braking but you will not have the assist you expect. Also when you turn off the key you will kill all computer control of anything. So your electronically controlled transmission, guess what?, won't work as you expect. In this situation it sounds like several different things occurred, but I won't speculate. The driver is notoriously unreliable due to the stress and panic of the situation.

It is much easier to say "I would havedone ," than to say "I did."

That's alot to go wrong with a high dollar car...he should have stuck with a Chevy. I've never had problems like that with any of my GM products.

Ironically I was out on my motorcycly Friday. 150hp CBR1100XX honda. Got up to about 9,000R in 4th gear, and the throttle stuck. Wide open. 9,500 and climbing. I hit the magic red kill switch and that was that. After I changed my pants, I checked the bike over and rode away.

I can't imagine how you can go that long and not just turn the danm car off.

Re: Driver survives 135mph speeds without brakes!

I had it happen to me before.

I was at the end of my street, takin my mouthers car to put gas in it for her,, cause she doesnt like pumping it herself  just being me, I floored it as i took a left at a stop sign,, spin the tires around and conor,, and oh sh!t!!! the floormat was all bunched up and somehow and held the petel to the floor. I really didnt have much time to think, its a short street, shorter then a football feald, at the end of the street is a stop sign, where u must stop and take either a hard right or a hard left, if u where to go straght you'd end up in someone living room. After a quick monent of panic, where I slammed the breaks, and did shift into netual, slam the breaks,, and then turn the key off.

It wasn't a good fealing, thats for sure. On the highway though? wtf? I think after a few miles anyone should have been able to figure that one out, what a moron.

I've been in this situation and the first thing I did was turn the key off.

Perhaps they should teach this to people in drivers school?

How bout the fact they guy was on the phone the whole time and no of the police thought to tell the guy to turn off the key.

Dont worrk U.K. guys, same exact thing happend here in the USA, cept the cops were real geniuses (sp) and used thier cop car to stop the "out of control" car.

Ken
