Last trip to the lake my boat stared acting funny after getting out of the no wake zone. I put it in drive and started cruising down the lake. Thirty seconds in, I lose all forward momentum and the engine drops down to an idle. I take it to neutral and put it back in drive, I build speed and begins to lose power off and on. So I idle it back to the cove to check things out. With the drive disengage I can build rpm and the engine acts normal. I thought I could feel a slight miss at idle but hard to tell. Put it in drive once again it still won't build speed. Plugs, fuel filter, oil, oil filter and impeller have recently been replaced. just looking for some guidance on my next steps.

REPAIR
Carburetor body corroded, unable to rebuild. Carburetor was also a reman automotive carb semi converted to marine spec.

Replaced carburetor ok now.

Howdy,

Welcome aboard!

Well first of all, you might have a look at the following thread... http://forums.iboats.com/omc-i-o-in...have-technical-information-diyers-468655.html

It's somewhat difficult for us to help you without knowing exactly what you have, so focus particularly on #1

Off the top of my head, your symptom appears to be fuel delivery (carb, filter, pump, pickup screen, tank vent, etc) related.

Replaced the fuel filter and hoses directly connected to it. Fuel filter had a small amount of debris floating around. Ran the boat at idle for about fifteen seconds did not see any new debris. Removed the carb to rebuild at work tomorrow. The four nuts holding the carb down were very loose, maybe causing a vaccum leak at operating temps? Idk after the rebuild I will post results and any new findings.

Carb was trashed. It's a reman non marine. The body is corroded pretty bad.

A holley 80457-5 rebuilt by fuel force. They adapted the vent tubes into it but the coating on the body just didn't hold up.

Re: Driveabilty issue 89bayliner challenger 351w

So I did a compression test (cold) and i got 140psi out of the right side of the motor and 130, 135, 140, and 140 (5,6,7,8) out of the left side. I wet tested cylinder 5 and 6 and got the compression up to 150psi. So I am assuming the rings are slightly worn more than the other. I'm not sure what numbers i would have gotten if on a warm test (probably high). Does anyone have any thoughts on this or should I just throw a carb on and hope for the best?
