Drive stoped working

I have a Mercruiser 5.7 (1984) 260mr. While running I started to smell burning rubber and lost my drive. After a tow to the dock and time to cool off it started to work again. After a few mins. I started to smell the rubber smell again. Any Ideas on where to start.

Sounds like the coupler at the rear of the engine (connects to the fly wheel).
look for "rubber dust" at the rear of the engine..........

Did you by any chance look to see what was smoking?
