Drive bellows ring, Alph I Gen II

Hi guys;

Was trying to get my gimbal bearing out and the ring that hold the bellows in place popped out. I must have hit it with the puller and popped it out. It seems a little bashed up. I guess what I am wondering is there a ring I need to buy and what is the proceedure to be putting this back in there. The drive bellows seems to be fine but its not stuck to the bell housing (the end where the ring came from)....Thanks

You definitly want to replace it. Ofcourse this requires a special tool. Is avaliable easily. Someone may chime in with a homemade version.
Don't disturb the anything. Just hold off until you put the new ring in.

Definitely need to put a new ring in. The part # is -816607, and the tool for putting it in (it can't be done properly without the tool) is 91-818162 (See manual 14, section 4B page 64)....

Do we use bellows adhiesive under that ring. I didn't see them ask for it in the service manual. I'm going to order the sleeve and the tool and try to find a you-tube on how to install that sleeve. found the parts, thanks achris.....

Ayuh,... The glue goes between the housing, 'n the bellows....
To install the ring, get a can of Quicksilver Power Tune, 'n spray the rubber with it, 'n slip the ring in-place...
It'll evaporate quickly, leaving the ring secured...

Bondo, are you saying I don't need that tool or do I still need that tool to push the sleeve in. I am under the impression it can't be done properly without it. My local Merc store wants $75.00 for it and I can get it from Marinepartsexpress.com for $40.00 plus UPS wich is likely another $40.00. I would be nice if I didn't have to spend that but I guess could add it to my colection of Merc tools. Some of these expensive tools can be made. I made one for getting the end caps off the trim rams, but I don't have any ideas for this one.....Thanks guys

Go buy a can of Mercury Power Tune, spray the bellows and sleeve and push it in by hand. Hold it in place for 15-30 second so it doesn't slip out and your set to go.

You should also check your alignment while you have the drive off. On ebay you can get an alignment combo that has adapter that will install this ring and your gimble bearing later when you need to replace it. Under $100.

Thanks for that advice but I already have an alignment tool.

Kind of a funny thing but I found a c clip and a few needles from a u-joint in the bellows. I then noticed that the drive shaft, with the two u-joints, had one orange one and one black one. I'm thinking that one of the joints must have blown up inside there. The boot looks like its fairly new, the joints are nice and smooth and tight and the gimbal bearing is a little rough, not missing and needles ( or rollers or what ever they're called). Apeared the be dry and free of water damage. I'll replace the gimbal bearing, sleeve, check the alignment and replace the drive. I will be changing the impeller and gear oil. I'm going to build on of those preasure testers if I can find the thread where they show how to build one.... Later....
