Not sure how many people out there use something like this, but I highly recommend getting one. Their about $100 bucks and let me tell you they are quite versatile and useful when working on your restoration. So far I've used mine to pull up carpet, do some sanding, and make cut outs in the dash for new panels and instruments. It's very easy to use, and helps you be more accurate when cutting the fiberglass or sanding.

I'm not trying to sound like an infomercial....just trying to pass on my experience and hopefully help someone find something useful for their project.

They have cheaper versions of the same tool and the more expensive one from Fein. I think for me, it comes down to the cost and quality of the blades/attachments. They are handy though! I'm debating picking one of the cheaper versions up.

You're right about the different versions.....I didn't want to pay for the Fein so I opted for the Dremel. I've had good luck with Dremel tools and thought it was worth the money.

I highly recommend getting one...even if its the cheaper version. Quite handy.

My full time job is a Handyman. I have the Harbor Freight version of the tool, and I have to say that I use it everyday!!! VERY useful. If you think you don't need one, just get one. You will find ways to use it more than you realize.

I've seriously considered getting one but have not needed it yet. Refurbished Dremel brand about $70.

I have two of the Fein Multimasters and an extensive collection of blades and attachments. I have no experience with the new variations by other companies now that Fein's patent has run it's course, but I'll be handing my Feins down to my kids. They are that well made. I could not more highly recommend the Fein Multimaster as a tool for boat restoration/repair.

I have to agree with you on the Multi Max. Even after the blades are worn down smooth, it still manages to cut. Check out the link in my sig. I have a video demo of me cutting out some fiberglass in my boat. Thanks, Steven

Nice video. Thanks for sharing. It works extremely well on plunge cuts too.

I have the Harbor Freight version of this tool, and have found 1001 uses for it. I have used it to cut fiberglass and wood & sand down gel-coat on the boat. Additionally, I have used it to cut drywall and frame wood all around the house. They have the original multi-function tool that oscillates at a fixed 19000 RPM for $35 (coupons are coming in the mail ever month at this price) or you can get their upgraded model that is variable speed 10000-20000 RPM for $70. I can't say enough good things about this tool. Every boat owner who does any of their own maintenance work needs one of these in their tool chest.

Re: Dremel Multi-Max

I have the Rockwell version. My rotten stringers were covered in thick roving and I was having a heck of a time cutting them out with the grinder and sawzall. I thought I punched thru the hull more than once. With this tool I was able to cut right up close to the hull. I bumped it on my legs and hands several times and it didn't even break the skin. I found that it's best to let the blades cool down often or else they deform and cause the resin to melt making it more difficult to cut. But when it syncs up, it zips thru glass like butter with little dust. 3 thumbs up.

I have a Fein Multimaster. Really cool tool, but mine quit working after about 2 mins of use. Sent it in and it took 3 months to get it back. It has a good warranty, so the repair was free. I wish my wife had just waited until the cheaper versions came out before she spent the $400 on the Fein. There is no hand tool worth that much to me, but it is pretty handy.
