DPS-A removed, now have more questions on findings.

Following up a thread I started a few weeks ago where I was asking questions about removing my outdrive(dps-a) , I got it off. I ended up having to use the hydraulic rams and a well placed wooded block to get it to separate. I was unfortunately greeted by a small amount of rusty water during the process, answering the question as to why it was so difficult to remove. When the drive fully separated, the gimbal bearing came with it as it was siezed onto the drive shaft. The gimbal was still spinning freely, just was stuck on the shaft. Apparently I had a leak in the bellows allowing water to intrude. Now my questions.

While the rust on the shaft and u-joints is light, surface rust, I think this would be a good time to replace the u-joints and clean the shaft. Are the u-joints available? I have gone online to Volvo parts schematics/parts numbers and it does not show that the u-joints are sold separately. Does anybody know if u-joints can be purchased and perhaps a parts number.

I am making the reconditioning of my lower unit my winter project and put it back on the boat next spring. Any help guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Attached is the service bulletin from Volvo Penta explaining u-joint part numbers and servicing.

It does not list the DPS-A specifically, but does list the DPS drive which, in this regard, is identical. Of course you know a knew bearing and bellows are in need as well. For future reference, this is one of the main reasons Volvo suggests removing the drive annually...not only to check the condition of everything, but to prevent extended water damage.

Great, thats exactly what I was looking for.

Yes, I plan on replacing the gimbal bearing and bellows next spring when the boat is back home and out of storage. Know that I know how to do it, I hope to make the removal an annual proceedure and hope that my reconditioning makes the process a little easier.

The parts that are listed in the link from skydrive start at 450$ That's the whole unit.
You can get the parts from Sierra Parts a lot cheaper.
Or take a u-joint to an auto parts store and compare.

After pricing replacement u joints, even the aftermarket ones, I may just keep the existing ones since they appear to be in useable condition, just some light surface rust. Before I re-install, I may just apply a thin coat of grease to protect their exterior from here on out.

What would be the best way to remove the light surface rust from the driveshaft so that the new gimbal seats but does not sieze to the shaft, emory paper?
