Re: DP290A removal of hinge Pins??????

I'm thinking that I should tighten the bolts evenly and in a star patern. I'll make sure that the seal is squished evenly and only until the shield touches the transom. I'm willing to bet that at about 25 ft lbs everything should fit nicely. Thoughts?

image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgJust a few pictures. I'm really bad at keeping my pictures in order. That is if I take any. The first is the bilge all painted up. The others are the motor coming out. The guy in the picture is my father.

Hey Scott. On the transom shield, should the steering arm be stiff and tight? My old one is very loose and the newer shield is very stiff. I greased it up and got a little better. But still stiff none the less.

It should have some resistance.

I would split the arm and drop the helmet to inspect the bushings. I had to replace my bushings and seals on my steering arm.

if the arm is too tight on the seal, it causes the seal to fail. if its too loose, the seal leaks.

if the bushings have gunk in them it could be stiff.

when you drop the helmet. make sure you indicate position of the tilt sensor on its rack.

Should I be able to move it by hand?

I think I will be cleaning up all of my old parts, painting and then putting them up for sale. If I can recoup half my cost it will be nothing short of a win

if you have a good upper gear box, hold on to it. those are worth their weight in gold.

Re: DP290A removal of hinge Pins??????

A bit late on this........ but for others and for future...... there is no reason to remove the entire drive for an engine replacement.
Separate the engine from the Flywheel Cover, and leave the F/C installed in the transom shield.
The PDS bearings and seals can be replaced while the F/C remains in place.

you need to use one of the bolts, put it into the jacking screw hole (I believe top at 12 oclock) and remove the clamp ring.
under there you will find a large o-ring - there is the same o-ring on the motor side of the transom shield.

that seal is the outer o-ring. there is an inner o-ring as well. .................

you have PDS bearings, not a gimbal bearing. similar in nature, different in terminology.
If you do use the "jack threads".... be sure to use all three... and be sure to blast them out and lubricate the threads.

The water seal is actually provided by the inner rubber cushion. ... the outer rubber cushion is simply the other half of the rear engine isolation.

A fixed geometry AQ main suspension fork/pivot tube system is considerably different from a Gimbal suspension system.

And again.... a bit late on this.... but for future........ take a quick look at this before building a Marine SBC.
Start at post 7. (Remove the spaces and paste this into your browser)

Since the F/C was removed with the engine, and will be going back in with the engine, you'll need to perform the 1-time-triangulation-procedure for the initial engine alignment.

greg,

to align, there are 3 bosses on the PDS casting that are about an 1/8" from the transom shield casting. the gap between the 3 should be within 1mm of each other.
