Bruce. take a look at the Blacks Marine release too... I bought a Chamberlain stacker recently, sent it back as it only works on cable DR. I took off my cable in favor of 200lb braid.. also, the Chamberlain does not (at least the stacker version) have a safety clasp to attach to your DR cable. If that baby slips off, down the bottom of the lake it goes. The Blacks Marine release is the way to go...I've got a co-worker who's dad is a charter capt on Lake Ontario.. I asked him what release he recommends, he said Blacks Marine is all they use.. They are the best...

I ran Blacks releases for years and they are a great release but I got tired of draging around small fish all day so I made the switch to Chamberlain releases now it rarely happens.

yea. if Chamberlain adds a safety clip to it's stacker version, I'd seriously consider em. I was just speaking to the stacker version.. .. as they are now to big a risk of em coming off and sinking.. (stacker),, Im sure the non stacker is fine

Interesting conversation. I run DR, planer boards and outriggers. Runs Black's on the outriggers. Scotty's on DR and planer boards. Having said that, in critical release applications I always go back to shower curtain hooks and rubber bands. Cheap and pretty much fail safe

Thanks. i will have to see what sized rubber band I would need. I would need something as light as possible.

how do you keep that curtain ring from sliding all over the place on the DR line/cable?

I am assuming that the drag of the ball causing the downrigger to have a slight angle to it keeps the clip on the bottom near the ball

when moving, the "blow back" is the angle created in the DR line/wire. the resistence of the ball being dragged through the water produces an angle -ie "blow back", that angle and force will push your release if not anchored somehow up to the top of the water....I like the curtain hook idea,, it's got to be held in place with something.. that was my ?

Never experienced said phenomenon.

We don't retrieve the DR. Can't retrieve when using planers or planer boards. Clip bait to line and the resistance of the lures passing thru the water pulls the bait to the end/bottom of the line.

Bruce, note how much "pre-load" I use with a fiberglass rod. That helps get proper release when it gets hit and actually acts to "set the hook" as the rod flexes back after the release. In the picture, I'm using the smallest Scotty release, 12# test line and trolling about 60' deep. Even then, the darn fish will sometimes not pop the release yet fight like maniacs once I get em hooked.

Old thread, but this is a real purdy pic. Even though I have a Cannon down rigger this is a great pic with that background. I just made it my screen saver :fish2:
