could, yes...the leakage being exhaust gas into the pump body or under it affecting the water flow ..use a thin amount around the pump housing base so it won't "squeeze" into the pump cavity when it's screwed down..same for the wear plate base

Take it apart, put sealant on the hearing housing/seal plate, and the housing itself.
It wont pump if you don't.

With my 18v Ryobi, it sprays out of there like a 1/4 inch garden hose.
Your problem is in the pump, not the engine.

I have pictures if you need them.

Thanks again folks. I'm going to replace head gasket today and check water jacket. Can't hurt, and who knows how ling it's been since last changed. If nothing there that could be cause, then off with LU again. I'm beginning to have nightmares about removing lower units, lol

I was hoping not to get to 5 or 6, thanks. Frankly that pin is the biggest headache of all. I snapped one the first time I tried to do it, so now I'm paranoid.

note its position when the lu slips down and try to get it back to that position when you slide the lu back up...bout all you can do...also remove the spark plugs to release compression and try to turn the flywheel to align the crank splines and ds splines while doing this...an assistant is a big help
