Re: Dogs gone

First off I am very sorry for your loss, pets can be very much a family member and their loss can be very upsetting.

Second, Don't be fooled into thinking Coyotes cannot take a dog this size, they have adaptability that even the bigger wolves do not have, Coyotes are more intelligent. They can and will pack but they can also live solitary lives, they will do whatever they need in order to survive.

Coyotes are believed to be getting bigger in certain areas of the continent, I say continent because they roam from Central America to Canada, they can and do breed with domesticated dogs AND WOLVES. Coyotes can breed together once or for many years, there have been instances of pairs breeding for life although this is rare, they have survived when Wolves have not many many times over, even though they can be hunted far more then Wolves ever were, many states have no limits on Coyotes harvested by hunters.

Where I am from in Arizona it wasn't rare to see a 30-40 lb coyote, I now live in Colorado and I have seen Coyotes upwards of 60 lbs I think I cannot say for sure because I don't hunt them but they are big here, the Largest Coyote on record is nearly 75 lbs.

They are a true survivor, they adapt better then any predator in North America other then Man.

Re: Dogs gone

Bear or Coyote, either one will take a 75lb dog with ease, just because a human can say Boo to a black bear and he will run, a dog is another story all together, dogs and bears have no love loss at all for each others, especially a sow with cubs, I had a black bear go after my two Golden's a few years ago and one of them was over 115lbs at the time, lucky I had a can of bear spray with me, or it would have turned out very nasty.

Where I live, we see small packs of Coyote's take dogs quite a bit larger than themselves all the time, it is an ongoing problem here in Montana, so as I said, it could be either, but at this time of year, I would suspect a bear with cubs.

We can't figure it out so we have decided that he just decided to leave for greener pastures. This makes everyone feel slightly better anyhow.

Sorry Chambers, that stinks. We just had one die a couple months ago - he let go right in my arms. Not as bad as losin' a kid ... but not too far off either.

Me to dingbat, please forgive me, I am so sorry for your loss...
Don't worry about it. That's life.
Your lucky your still ignorant of the difference between loosing a pet and a child. Having been there, done that.....I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Puts life into perspective in a hurry.

This thread speaks to me as I was just talking today with my wife about the pain of losing a pet so many people have to face. I think that sometimes losing a special pet hits a nerve in us unlike anything we experience even when losing a child or parent etc. When my dad passed in front of me in the ER while a nurse and I held him up it was the most traumatic thing I had ever experienced. When my dog I raised from a pup died at age 12 I went into a depression and it took months and several different medicines for me to deal with the grief. Logic doesn't matter when dealing with an animal you lose I guess.
