Freya looks like a little ball of fury! What is she?

The labs are precious too. My next dog will be a blue heeler tho, I know several people that have them, as long as they are kept active they are the coolest!

Import from myphone 030.jpgMines a stone cold killer as you can see from the pic. Although if you touch or go after one of my kids she WILL eat you.

Every time I see your Lab in your avatar It reminds me of our B/L Cocoa that we had to put down a few months ago .
Sounds like whatever pup comes along and ends up under your door step will have a great home ! Thanks for sharing this with us ..

Like a ninja waiting to pounce. 40# of couch potatoe fury I can tell!

I prefer this one myself, lol

My dad used to say good dogs come from good owners. We've always had excellent dogs growing up. Never had to chain one up outside, or crate one at home while we were gone. I learned from him, when choosing a dog, it's just as important for them to choose you, as you choose them. When we would get a new pup growing up he always made sure we could interact with them before choosing one.

I remember when we picked up our Mandy (jack Russell terrier mix) she wasn't my first choice. As I was young I wanted one with a little different coloration, but my dad insisted on her after watching us play together. He said she choose us and would m make a good addition to the family. Next to my Morgan, she was the Best dog ever. Always listened, and heart set on pleasing us, not to mention stubborn as a mule.

I've always used his advice since, letting the dog choose us as much as we choose her. It's worked out well.

To this day he insists "you have to talk to them like they're your buddy. They don't know what the words are, but they understand what you're saying." He used to talk to all our dogs constantly, I can't say his logic is sound, but I'm a believer.

Blue Heelers are awesome and freakishly smart. Like, can do long division smart. Also, Mad Max's dog of choice which is totally awesome too. Little Freya is a blue nose American Pit Bull Terrier. She just happens to have an entirely grey/blue coat with hazel eyes, except for a small patch of white on her chest. Her siblings were nearly solid black and brown and her mother was all red while her dad was blue and white "moo" pattern, like a cow. She just had her first Vet visit yesterday and all is well. She's practically hose broken already too (jinx).

My Dad was a Beagle guy and we always had one since my earliest memories.....they were all named Barney with a number after. I know that you didn't hope for a certain breed to stray into your yard but great job taking care of that pup! Good on ya, Splat....

Actually that is a basenji shepard mix. She is a rescue. She bonded with the kids instantly. I took me a year to touch her. Two years after that I still can't stand over her without a flinch. They are really strange dogs. She can raise a kitten and take of it like a mother. But I had two dogs come after my son on our property and she killed one and I had to pull her off the other. They are chase dogs from Africa. I can walk her anywhere without a leash or tell her its OK to go. Really, really home in the woods. 6 ft vertical leap and really fast. A fence is a joke to this breed. I have seen her catch a squirrel and then just look at it. Throw a stick and they just look at you. Everything I've read says the full blood ones are not good pets.

Small world, I was talking about Besenjis earlier today. Funky little critters. They don't bark, instead they sort of mew like a cat and are considered only semi-domesticated, kind of like the Dingo of Africa.

This is the wrong breed for a first time dog owner. They make great pets IF you are the alpha male. If not they will run the house. Mine plays with the mail man because he made the trusted list. Would not let my mom in the house when I was not home. They are fearless and will not back down. Mine still growls at me when I make her do something she doesn't want to but does anything I tell her. I am 55 and have owned many dogs and this is my favorite. They are very, very vocal and howl and yodel.

Admiral insists on having a dog that I get to take care of everything but feeding them.

Thanks for sharing Splat. Nice story and very well written.

I'm amazed with the members that have the talent/flare for writing on here. props to you all.

Just a side note: Went to a 7&8 grade Power of the Pen competition. (granddaughter)
66 schools, 6-12 kids per school, The kids/coaches filled the entire floor, wall to wall, and the families filled the bleachers of a nice size high school gym. Very impressive at all levels.

My apologies to Splat. I didn't intend this to be published over my byline in The Review. It is so well written I suggested they publish it, but credit Splat as the author of an exceptional piece.

JB, no need to apologize. But I'm not following, where was it published?

I don't think it's all that well written, more like scratched out on a cell phone keyboard when I should have been working! Lol
