Re: Dog moment from last night

Bear and Rib incident update . . .

While I am reading heycods note about Patty, I hear the loudest dog puking episode ever. Reminded me of "Christmas Vacation" when cousin Eddie's dog is under the table "yackin' on a bone, yup, see he got it up" . . .

Last night Bear woke us up four times to be let out . . . Seems the ribs are making their way through his system.

Re: Dog moment from last night

Growing up, my folks were friends with another couple who lived a few blocks away. We often went over there on Fridayt nights and the adults would play cards til the wee hours. They had kids our age. They also had a big English bulldog named Oscar.

Oscar was a fearsome looking fellow (but he was very gentle and good-natured). But the volume and quality of his methane emissions were far more fearsome than his looks. I am not exaggerating when I say he could clear out the whole house. When he let one go, and they often made that whistling sound, there was no mistaking who was responsible for it even if he was in another part of the house. I don't know what they fed him, but maybe they should have shopped around some for something that didn't ferment so violently.

"Aaaaaaaaggghhhhcckkkkk! Someone let Oscar outside, puhleeeeeze!"

:)

LOL @ RF and DD,

Yes, Maggie can definitely clear a room. Hers sound more like a little tiny truck setting its parking brakes . . .

She spent the night with friends once, we forgot to tell them about that . . . :D

Edit: Where's jtex? We need some Dusty stories. I considered just adding on to his recent thread, but it died too quickly. Not sure why

I agree with your wife, dogs are so strongly 'pack' oriented that not allowing one to be with it's 'pack' (the family) seems cruel.

BUT, maybe you should check out a Labradoodle (boy, I hate that name). A mix between a Lab and a standard poodle, one of the main reasons they started this breed is that they don't shed and are not allergenic to many people who are otherwise allergic to dogs. My sister has one, and my mother, who is VERY allergic to dogs, had no problems when staying with her for a week.

They're decent sized and the mix is very smart and friendly. Even kind of cute, if you're not looking for a macho looking dog. Of course I'd do some research on the breeders; would hate to get one that had the skin/ fur traits of a lab rather than a poodle!

Re: Dog moment from last night

I know I've posted this before, but seems like a good place to repeat. I've got two border collies, Sasha & Jack. Sasha is dominant (although she gives up about 15 lbs.), but doesn't flaunt it. Possesion is 100% of the law between them when it comes to toys.

But if Jack has something Sasha really wants, she'll pick up a ball & keep dropping it in my lap until I throw it. Jack instinctively leaps after the ball at which point Sasha immediately jumps on whatever it was that Jack had that she wanted in the first place.

She once partially swallowed a fish hook with catfish bait on it that a nephew had left unattended. The hook caught in her throat rather than further down. Made it to the vet just before they closed; they put her out, and were fortunate to be able to just reach the hook and remove it without having to cut & operate.

As I carried her back to the truck (completely limp, tounge hanging out the side of her mouth) the vet told me that she'd be out for awhile and to keep her in her crate overnight so she wouldn't hurt herself as she gradually came out from under the anesthesia. About 5 minutes into the ride home I hear this "ruff, ruff, ruff" from the extended cab of the truck. Kept repeating it every few minutes, three barks each time. She's still on her side, not moving, but looking up out of the windows, barking as if to say 'something isn't quite right, what the heck's going on here?'. Get her home 30 mins after leaving the vet and as I carry her into the house she starts to weakly struggle to get down 'cause she sees a tennis ball she wants. Put her in her crate and she starts pawing at the door to get out 'cause the kids are there and she wants to play with them. Out for the night my a**, lol.

She's 11 now and still exhibits some of the type A energy she's always had, but alot less than she used to. Starting to show some subtle signs of aging. She's so strong willed and has such a high energy level she's been a PITA on many occasions, but I'll sure miss her when she does go. Fortunately, I don't think it'll be too soon; I'd guess she's got at least 3-5 good years left.

i'm not so sure the chase of the church worker was job related for your shepard !!! shepards are actually prejudice against blacks.. i own 2 and have a close freind who trains shepards and he say's they actually appear to be prejudice...I have an unreal 110lb. male whose 6 yrs. old . Best dog you could ask for he'd do anything just to hang out with me..wouldn't harm a flea although his size and bark is very intimadating now if a black person comes around whether heis in his yard the tahoe boat where ever he actually shows his teeth and you never see them unless he's eating favorite pass time by the way ......i guess it's just their nature..

I had to reply to this also. We have a standard poodle. Poodles along with a few other dogs have hair like people as opposed to fur. Therefor they have no dander. LakeLivin is correct about the Labroadoodle and/or Goldendoodle. But since they are a mix there is a chance that they have the dander that you don't want. Even if it is less than the Golden or Lab it generally is still there in some amount. These dogs are also quite a bit more expensive since they are currently the "designer" type dog. Another dog that is good for people with alergies is the Portugese waterdog. They have hair like a poodle and look a little like a poodle but are built a little broader in the head and chest. Another thing to be aware of is that some people are also allegic to the dogs saliva and not neccessarily the dander. You should check that out by visiting someone that has the type of dog you are interested in. Going to the local dog shows is a way to make contacts.

Now as to the poodle reputation or stigma (read prissy). Our dog is also very smart. When we have had parties at our house she has been known to go into the room where all the coats and purses are. She has unzipped purses with gum in then and gently taken out a peice and unwrapped it (without tearing the wrapper) and eaten the gun. She is also a frisbee dog and loves to chase and catch the frisbee. Much to the amazment of some folks who seem to thing poodles can't do that. We don't do any prissy haircuts either. Straght kennel cut for her. She also has a pretty intimidating bark when someone unknown approaches the house. Another thing she does is position herself between our daughter and any stranger that she does not know. Standard Poodles are the larger poodle and have a completely different disposition than the smaller ones. So there are options for those w/ asthma (such a smy wife).

funny thing, Dusty Crockett King of the Wild Frontier (Dusty) will fuss at me if the leftovers don't get cleared...does his best Lassie "come-quick-Jeff's-fallen-down-a-well", you know the routine. I know what he really wants but he appears to be saying "get in here and clean this mess up!"

Now bringing candy to y'all is very nearly spooky...I believe it though. Bear sounds like a keeper!

[btw retnug, had a poodle in the family when I was a kid, smallest dog I ever had but she had the biggest vocabulary of any animal I ever knew]

Interesting. My sheppard, Sage, has no problem with people, regardless of skin color. It's a good thing too, otherwise I would have a few less friends coming over.

I know what you mean but just so there is no confusion a standard poodle is the larger poodle. They generally start at around 40lbs or 20inches at the shoulder and go up from there. I have friends who hade a 95lb poodle. Which is pretty big. And they are totally different than the smaller yappier cousin that my mom had when I grew up as a kid.

Actually Bear is 95 lbs. I was around a Poodle that size when I was a kid. Friend's dog, smart big, cool. Standards need a better name, like, uh, Standard.

Re: Dog moment from last night

I've got a siberian husky that is as stubborn as the day is long. He learned at a young age that no chain link fence would stop him. I had to keep him on a chain in a fence in yard for his first few years. We recently moved to a home with no fence around the yard so we put one up. I bought some horse fence (the hard wire type with the lil rectangles) figuring there was no flex to it. He would stick his nose under the chain link and when it started to flex he would push.. hard.. till his whole body was under it. Anyway we fenced 3 sides of the yard and butted up to the neighbors chainlink. He just cruised right under the neighbors fence and out the other side and off he'd go laughing at us the whole way. I refused to put him on a chain so I installed an electric wire all the way around the bottom of the fence. He followed me faithfully around the yard as I did it. I turned it on and turned to pretend I was walking in the house. (he wouldnt leave with me outside) He sniffed it once and got a slight shock and jumped back and looked at me wondering what happened. I laughed and walked casually in the door of the house then poked my head back out just in time to see him go for it again. This time he got the full zap. Went about 3 feet in the air and had his tail between his legs before he landed. Went to the middle of the yard as I walked out laughing. He wouldnt have anything to do with me for about 3 days afterward.

He still gets a kick out of jumping up on the bed. No jump/climb like a normal dog... he goes straight up in the air and comes down right beside ya and makes ya think he's gonna land on ya. 70 - 80 lb dog. I swear he's grinning the whole time.

DOGSDAD - Just curious, did you find training your husky to be a difficult prospect? Mine is incredibly smart but refuses to do anything he's told to do unless of course there's food involved.

Re: Dog moment from last night

Hey, thanks for the info on the "doodles". I never heard of them before. It's something to think about.
My daughter had a test done to determine what she was allergic to, and pet dander was one of em. I don't know if saliva was even in the test or not.
It used to be that she would start coughing and wheezing about 5 or 10 minutes after walking in a house that had pets. We had to screen all her friends, and make sure they didn't have pets before we let her play at there house. Before we moved out west, any coughing or wheezing was a guaranteed trip to the emergency room later that night for her. She seems to be getting better now, but she still has to take her breathing treatment if she gets around pets. But at least no more emergency room trips!
I'm still hoping that the asthma is not a permanent condition and will go away eventualy. And I'll keep my eye open for the "doodle" dogs! ;)
I love all the stories about dogs and cats here, I can relate to all of them. Sneaking food, sneaking on the furniture, the guilty, furtive looks they give when caught, brings back memories! I had pets when I was a kid, and I think a german shepard dog is about the best friend a kid could have! (not trying to start a "my breed is better than your breed" war, by the way.)

Re: Dog moment from last night

Wimperdink, I had a husky, "Thief", he had the same personality as you describe....If there was a way out he would find it.....My Mom would see that he had gotten out & would yell after him, "Thief,thief!".....That would always draw some attention......Thief once ate a frozen solid London Broil in less than 15 minutes!
Bomber, a black lab, was charged with rape! He jumped through our upstairs screen onto the front porch roof, to the ground , to the neighbors, through their screen, had sex with their "show quality dog", right in front of them....We got sued & HAD TO HIRE A LAWYER & GO TO COURT! We were able to prove that she enticed him & that they had some responsibility because they failed to provide enough security from the scoundrel! We did have to pay for a doggy abortion, though.....
"Doobie", another black lab, was a hopeless garbage junkie.....He wouldn't do it if you were watching, but go outside without the garbage being secured by a chain (he would chew through anything else) & it was all over.....JK
