Re: Does Your Job Stink?

I win.
My waterworks office is at a wastewater treatment facility. All of the operators, myself included, are certified in both disciplines in case of emergencies. The treatment plant accepts sewage from approximately 50000 residents and several hundred businesses. Everyone goes at least once a day... so my work smells like 50000 plus turds every day. Top that! :)

I am about to change a poopy diaper. I'm not talking about one of those infant diapers- I'm talking toddler droppings. He has ate fish, veggies, bananas, eggs, cheerios, goldfish, and soy milk since the last change.

Is that stinky enough?

Picture to follow....

Re: Does Your Job Stink?

The worst smell at my place of work was prolly last year when a co-worker mishandled an ENTIRE pallet of Clorox Bleach (at least 150 of the biggest bottles maybe more). He was bringing down from the very top rack in recieving..........I turned the corner just in time to see the whole pallet fall 30ft. If you were on the opposite side of the warehouse, your nose would still be on FIRE.

Wait, wait. Can I get another entry?

I used to call on a rendering plant (default extension of my office?). Ever see a wheel loader scooping up butcher's leftovers? Literally a mountain of bones with stuff still stuck to 'em  I asked a guy that worked there how he could handle the smell. He said "what smell?".

Not long ago I had a drunk prisoner throw up, urinate, and defocate in the back seat of my patrol car. All 3 bodily functions were in a very liquid form and had a most unpleasant odor. For days! On cloth seats.

Autopsies are always a nice odor to start a day off with.

OMC - great smell ain't it?

How about 150 pizza crust burning black cause the conveyor in the oven stopped working. Actually the smell isn't too bad, but the smoke will make you choke something awful and will burn your eyes for hours.

Also smells good when the grease traps are cleaned out. Don't even want to know why that smells so funky.

Oh yeah, then there is Tom, co-worker, he smells like rotting/fermenting sour kraut. 7 feet is a safe distance on most days.

Working as a spanner swinger in the food industry I get my nose into all sorts of nasty niffs, but the worst by a long long way was a repair to a packing machine at a maggott farm, the smell there was so bad I could taste it, my clothes smelt that bad when I left I had to take them off and throw them away, 160 mile drive home in just my boxers :( :(

People here like to put the coffee pot back on the warmer when it is all but gone. Stinks up the whole building something awful.

Once helped move chickens from the laying building to trucks (off to the plucker's). And young hens to the laying house. Building about 100 ft X 300 ft. All automated; feed came on conveyor and eggs rolled to back of cage onto conveyor to candling.

The cages were hanging over and open pit about 20 feet deep. and with all that feed there was a lot of chicken poop. Just imagine the smell and high in ammonia!! They use loaders to load spreader and farmers paid good $'s to get it spread on the fields. The operators were supplied coveralls and showers to clean up at the end of the day. Guess what? Foreman said they had a high turnover (ask if I wanted a job) -- few days work and no amount of soap and water is going to get read of that smell!

Re: Does Your Job Stink?

I remembered another stench. Not at work but one time I was swimming in the river and stepped on something soft and squashy but also made a slight crunching sound as my foot broke through. I then felt bubbles on my legs and when the bubbles surfaced the smell made me gag. I believe it was a deer that broke through the ice the winter before. Nasty smell.
