What about the theory that higher octane fuel when mixed with oil will last longer is that true?

Interesting thread! I have been using Amoco/BP premium (Amoco Gold at 91 octane) exclusively in all of my 2 cycles because in our area it is ethanol free. Now I have a Honda 50 hp 4 cycle and the dealer tells me to only use 87 octane because it will produce more power, etc. Rodbolt's explaination makes sense, so I appreciate that, but that means I'm back to using ethanol fuel.

Maybe Amoco/BP Silver at 89 octane and half the ethanol is the best compromise. Amoco Silver is acutally a 50/50 blend of regular and Gold.
