hey,
I was just wondering if there is an advantage to use super over regular gasoline? Would a force outboard run hotter with a higher octane?

Howdy,

Welcome to iboats. :)

No advantage at all, Jamie.

Contrary to popular opinion, "premium" gas is called premium because it is more expensive. It is NOT higher quality than regular, it is just more tolerant of high compression ratios, higher than you will find in any stock 2 stroke.

This is a Non-repair question so I am moving it to Outboard Non-repair Discussions.

Yeah, you'll actually have LESS power with higher octane, because there is actually less gasoline per gallon...

ZmOz,
Less gasoline per gallon? I don't understand.

Re: does octane matter?

Well, I don't know about less gasoline per gal>>>>I remember reading about higher volitility of lower octane fuel>>tends to burn faster & can detonate much easier. If I remember correctly, when distilled (or CRACKED)oil is broken down by hydrocarbon weights> Methane>1 carbon,Propane 3 carbon atoms, Butane 4 carbon atoms, ect>>>Gasoline's volital components where broken into octane (8 carbon atoms) & heptane(7 carbon atoms)>>>octane allows greater compression before spontaneously igniting(detonation). Heptane flashes with little compression. An 87 octane rateing means the gas contains 87%octane & 13%heptane.>>>NOT MORE GAS OR LESS
As for using higher ratings>>>follow the manufacturers suggetion>>>Except maybe remember>>>most Plus fuel and Prem. fuels have more detergent additives. I know my car (Mercury grand Marque, dual overhead cam V8 calls for 87 octane>>REGULAR. But after the upper half of the engine had to be pulled apart at the dealer because of sever carbon buildup>>>they recommended that we use 89 octane fuel. Something to think about.

You could always save money on gas by using the octane number that the motor manufacturer calls for and then use a product to decarbonize your motor. Use TCW3 motor oil in the right proportion and you could also curtail carbon build up in the motor combustion chambers and exhaust ports.

There are more additives to resist detonation, and less of that flammable stuff they pump out of the ground, in every gallon. ;)

OK>>I understand what your saying now>>>
they use to use tetra-ethyl lead additives to increase octane ratings, then they used MTBE>>>now here in New York, we get ethanol>>>a lot of problems with the ethanol in boats here.

Lot of problems with it in anything! Gas today is just short of junk, and if the EPA has its way (and it will) things will only get worse.

Re: does octane matter?

I hope 'you' plan on doing this first, let us know how long before your stops working :D

We certaianly do seem to be up against the wall where fuel quality is concerned. Over here in Australia, one of the petrol companys even says at the pump that their fuel should not be used for marine applications....

Re: does octane matter?

My understanding is that it was outlawed in New Zealand (sp?)>>>NO MARINE OR AVIATION USAGE!!!

I have just learned of a movement here in New York to get it (ethanol) out of marine fuels>>>New York OUTLAWED the use of MTBE last year due to public health concerns. Seems it was leaching into the ground water.
To help with the oxygenation & boost "octane ratings", they now claim to add 10% ethanol>>>
Some have been finding as much as 40% in their tanks>>>They claim "Phase Seperation". But the real big problem is that the Fuel lines and pumps are breaking down & ethanol is absorbing water.

You can get that anywhere. There is no reason to use it in any outboard, because again, you should use the lowest octane you can. There is no reason to run anywhere near 107 octane in any outboard unless it is a HIGHLY modified race engine.

Re: does octane matter?

107 octane av-gas is nothing. I can go right down the road here and buy all the 'low lead' av-gas I want, and its 121 octane. The local fuel distributer always stays open late on Fri. to sell gas to the drag racers for use at the nearby track. When his son used to race, he was known to send a tanker to the track. He tries to keep a supply on hand for his steady customers.

But 107 av-gas is usually what is sold at the service stations that sell "race gas". The "low lead" is getting hare to find with more and more of the agriculture spraying going to helicopters or turbin powered aircraft. The last couple of years it was only available during the crop dusting season at most places.

Re: does octane matter?

Um, That would be BP Dunaruna, I generaly try to use other petrol stations now due to this, I also had to clean the fuel tank and carb (and fuel lines) on one of my cars because of the ethanol,(left sticky yellow mess through everything) that came from BP. (n.b. I was not the only one in my area that got bad fuel from this particular station)

Re: does octane matter?

Were a bit stuffed here in NZ as we've only got 1 refinery in the whole country. Not surprisingly the base gas ( - custom adatives) is the same everywhere.
