Does lifting an engine by the flywheel pose danger to internal parts?

I have a 125 hp Mercury outboard (347 pounds). If I lift a motor this size using a ring on the fly wheel, does it pose any danger to the inner parts (ie. bearing, seals, etc) along the crank shaft?

Thanks,
Nate

the manual for my 850 says to lift the engine with a lifting eye, and tells you the part number to buy one. I assume it's the preferred method.

If you have any doubt, it's worth getting the manual for your engine.

Use Merc lifting eye that threads into the flywheel...that is what it is designed to do...good luck - ps just purchased one from dealer for around 40 bucks.

I don't think its a good idea to lift any motor by the flywheel but if as thehermit says there is a Merc part for it, it should be safe.

Actually the lifting eyes screw into the end of the crankshaft, not the flywheel. Most outboard flywheels are too fragile to support the weight of the engine. However, the crank will press against the thrust bearing in the block and will cause no damage. That is the designed lifting point.

A large screw eye will work if the threads match.

UFM82

My old Merc was lifted by an eye that screwed into the flywheel hub. Merc Part and safe.
The motor is balanced perfectly and is safe to handle then.

Peter

OMC V4's newer than 1991 are produces without lifting eyes too and should be lifted by an eyebolt from the end of cranckshaft, or attached to flywheel puller.
