just curious. Was talking about it and heard that you should never go leaner than 50:1 mix on anything, and that 100:1 was too lean.
Anybody been running their outboard for a length of time at 100:1?

God I hope not...

The ONLY time any 2 cycle engine should be run at 100:1 is with Amsoil 100:1 oil, and even then most people use at least 80:1. 100:1 on regular oil or even cheap synthetic is a guaranteed way to ruin a good engine.

I had a Evinrude 6 HP (1986) that said 100:1 oil mixture. Dealer said it was correct 100:1. Had the motor for about 15 years and I was on the lake and it just died. Mechanic basically said it was done. It wouldn't be worth it to fix it I guess. If you added 75:1 (I experimented) the motor would bog way down and barely run. Evinrude experimented with this for a few years (I think). Ever since then I just haven't liked or trusted Evinrude. Anybody else have one of these motors.

I think VRO systems run as lean as 100:1 at idle. But I could just as well be wrong.

the OLD VRO systems were 100:1 at IDLE...The new VROs are 50:1 all the time and have been for quite a few years..

Yes, at IDLE, but at more than a few RPMs they run at 50:1.

youngboater - OMC changed the 100:1 recommendation to 50:1. If it ran like crap on anything richer, it's probably because it was damaged on 100:1...

Tohatsu uses 100:1 at idle speeds and 50:1 wide open, so I am told.

The old 100:1 at IDLE VROs haven't been used since the late 80's, early 90's....too many moving parts.

youngboater, yes Johnson/Evinrude did recommend the 100:1 mixture in 1985 and 1986, I think. By 1987, they had recinded that recommendation and told us to use the tried and true 50:1 ratio.

I am suprised your engine made it as long as it did, as they were failing already after a couple years at 100:1.

I've been running my 1985 15hp Johnson on 50:1 since 1986.

Yeah it will fuel/oil foul the plugs if you flood it, but its still running.

Also see these posts:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=025530#000000

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=024076#000000

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=024903#000003

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=025363#000005

Re: does anyone run their 2-stroke at 100:1 mix?

I done a tune-up on a 4HP a couple a weeks ago (A 100:1 Version) and actually it looked good but he very seldom ever had it much over a fast Idle. Customer thought it had arond 300 hrs on it, all at 100:1. Of course I advised 50:1 to CMA, but I don't think he would ever hurt that engine the way he run it, on 100:1, it may rust-over eventually, but I don't think he'd a burned it up.

Like those links say...OMC had 100:1 for several years in the mid 80s. They changed back to 50:1 because of corrosion issues while under warranty on motors that set several months between use in humid climes. It wasn't wear related. That info came to me from the warranty mgr of OMC International. He also told me there was a huge safety margin when running 50:1. Too bad no OMC warranty mgrs are around anymore to explain myth from fact on oil questions.

I've got some little Yamaha's that specify 100:1 and they've been running hard for years like that with no problems.

my 95 model 40hp yamaha specifies 100:1 in all of the manuals that came with when i bought it new. even says so on the gas tank and a little sticker on the side of motor. i have never run it 100:1 though. usually somewhere between 50-60:1. never a problem (knock on wood)......

I know I have posted this before, but for those that didnt see it, I ran the old 100:1 Amsoil fore two years at 80:1 in a 1975 Evenrude 85 HP on a 15' Ranger Bass Boat at WOT everywhere I went at 6,000 RPM without a hitch and never changed the plugs or decarbed once while I had it. The guy I sold it to went back to regular oil, and it was dead in 6 months.

lube, maybe it worked better on the older motors, the new ones seem to be to picky. (most of the motors they ran were older)

Dont agree, Ive used it in newer engines also, and if I had the injection system on my 150 disconected and premixed, I would use it in it also. Ive never blamed anyone for being sceptical about it, If it bothers you, there are plenty of synthetics out there you can run at 50:1 and many are in fact TC-W3 (R) Certified. Knowone is twisting anyones arm to run at 100:1, but it does work, and work verywell with the right oil.
