does anyone know how to convert ignition systems 850 merc.

I want to convert my distributor system to a coil on plug system. I know I need a ecm, coils, a trigger, etc. does anyone know of a conversion kit?

or know what parts are needed and where I can source them?

You might tell us the year or provide a serial number. That motor could have several different types of ignition system. When you say "coil on plug", do you mean a Merc CDM system or something else?

Sorry but no as the ADI system uses a different front crankcase and carb setup, linkage and there are no bosses to mount ignition plate to block. And the CDM system will not fit as it would have to come off a looper 115.

Are you have a problem with your ignition and need help troubleshooting?

All systems can have a failure, the trick is to learn the correct troubleshooting so as to easily figure out what went wrong and repair it the most cost effective manner.

my bad! it is a 85 hp merc I think it is a 1975, SN# starts with a 37#### so it is an early one.

well I think I have a trigger problem, at half throttle it has a misfire, and idles rough. at WOT it seems to run great, just off of idle seems fine. and the plugs are new, carbs have been rebuilt. the three wires going to the trigger have bare spots on them. I would like to go distributor less being that the thing is not available any more.

Likely you do not have a trigger problem, as they work or they don't. Sounds like dirty carbs.... Check link and synch.

Or broken yet abutted trigger wires, they can be replaced, carefully.

The distributor is NLA from Merc but I believe CDI has replacement parts available. They only sell a trigger as part of a dist assy. But I'll bet your trigger isn't bad. Maybe the wires, but not the hard parts.
