Dock Damage Needs Repair

I just recently joined but have been a longtime reader. I bought a used boat yesterday and it has some damage it is a 1998. Not sure if I should just fill with putty or putty first then glass. It is toward the rear of the boat. Previous owner said it got under the dock then raised up. I have attached some pictures.

What kind of boat is this. How will she be used? Will you be gelcoating or Painting. How picky are you going to be with how the final finish looks? Since this is above the water line you have lots of options.

This is a 23' Red Fin CC, used in the bay for fishing and hydro sliding. I was going to use sometype of deck paint to do the sides of the boat. the floor and decks have a rubber type flooring, that I don't want to mess with. It doesn't have to be perfect, it is a used boat.

That looks like previously repaired damage, and a HUGE chunk of resin:

that's got lot of caulking above the rubrail..

Any chance it was damaged a 2nd time in the same place as a previous repair?


The PO's story is the boat drifted under a dock & the tide raised the boat up into the dock, damaging the gunwale?

Twice?

Wow, that is interesting. He did not say anything about being repaired previously. You can't really see behind it, it is right on the edge.

If you can't see the back of the damage thru the hatch:

Maybe you can reach up to the back side, or even better get a cellphone/camera/GoPro video camera under there & smap a pix or 2?

I just went out and looked and under the lip looks like brand new, well 1998 brand new. No signs of being repaired. Checked around the edges and it it caulked heavy around the bumper all the way around? should it be?

the side of the hull is about where the deck starts. It has about a 3-4 in lip or over hang all the way around the boat.

I don't know if the caulking is original, but is the white along the damage paint or gelcoat?

I agree and see that, should I re caulk it. Also, should I grind out the resin and fill it with a putty then put fiberglass cloth over it? which would think is best?

I'm not sure what your level of experience is with laying fiberglasss. Marine Tex is a a really nice product to work with though. Others can chime in, but I'd suggest using an abrasive to flare out the cracks and edges along the hole. Make sure to remove all the loose pieces in that hunk of resin. Then rough up the top of that resin and fill the cracks and hole with Marine Tex. It hardens and bonds and you can sand it flush everywhere. Finished product is hard as fiberglass, sands smooth and is waterproof. It is white. It's paintable.

Okay, Here's what I'd do based on what your usage and descriptions are. Chip out and grind out any and all loose and broken glass and grind the gouged area down and back to fresh glass. Mix up some thickened resin using cabosil and cut up pieces of CSM so it's as thick as Peanut butter. Spread it into the gouges and form it back to the shape as best you can. Sand and Fair to get the shape desired. Cut some long strips of CSM and lay over the repair and wet out with resin. Sand and Fair until smooth. Paint. Done!
