Re: do people have no clue?

i think the point was that the 'slow' wake is larger than on plane, and it would be more courteous to just attempt no wake or if there is enough distance when passing, to just stay on plane. IMHO

but different situations require different reactions. :)

I live in Kansas and the law says that you are to slow down with enough time to not cause danger to people in small boats or even on the shore. I think the problem comes from boaters slowing down right before they are next to the small craft.
As far as poeple on small boats, I use to canoe in fairly large lakes. I was always up to the challenge of big waves and actually enjoyed them. My biggest complaint was always those jerks in the bass boats that would come dangerously close to my canoe and then slow down within yards of me. Then speed right back up laughing while I was struggling to keep from capsising.

Here in and around the Sidney (B.C.) area we have an enormous amount of sea kayaks now. Lot's of rentals and it's generally a sport that's really caught on. I think of myself as a considerate boater, I always keep my waves under control and stay out of others way... it's easier that way. On more than one occasion I've had some of these sea-kayakers give me the finger for leaving a 1' high stern wave, a long ways from shore and a fair distance from them. These guys think they own the oceans much like the hikers own the trails and the cyclists own the roads. I wonder if any of them realise they're kayaking in waters that whip up to 3' seas regularly! Some kayakers really bug me. They have no clue either.

How bout this one.

My dad and I are fishing for Sturgeon on the Columbia River on the WA/OR southeast border, having a great time when over the course of 10 minutes we keep hearing a huge rumbling sound but never payed much attention until this big ass barge loaded to the gills is rollin on through, I am tellin ya I don't think I have pulled 20 lb anchors up from 80 ft of water and got the hell out of there so fast in my life, we were in a 14ft alum deep V boat, no match for the 10 foot swells of the barge. I thought we were gonners, I don't think that guy could just get the hell out of the way though. We hammered the trottle and cruised on to calmer water. Quite an exciting day.

Re: do people have no clue?

It is sad how some people can be so inconsiderate.
We were anchored at a private campsite on our local lake, about 4 boats rafter up. We were settling for the night, putting up the tents and starting a fire when we see this 24ft-er going along the shore at about 15mph, causing a big wake. He did not care about the campsite, our boats or the no-wake zone he was in! He just blew about 100 ft past our boats and I had only one thing to say: "uh-oh". We just watched out boats bang against each other wildly (fenders are overrated anyway), antennas slapping each other silly, I could almost feel my anchor breaking loose. Other boaters at the camp site started yelling "Hey, no wake zone!". Do you think this guy even turned his head??

Some people don't have any idea what they're doing, let alone understand buoys. :(

Lou

Re: do people have no clue?

sat. me and the wife were taking the boat out for the first time. 16' tri-hull. we were in the main channel when this cabin crusier came by trimed low in the water so his kids on jet ski could jump the wake. we hit the first wave still on plane. I tried to shut it down in time but couldn't. 4' rollers I jumped the first one buried the nose in the next one I thought we were goners. threw a 15 lb anchor 10 feet in the air. what a jacka$$!!!
he didn't care about the 100's of other boats he was swamping.

Well as being someone whos been in a boat way befor i could walk (growing up in south louisiana).where i was in a boat more than a car was taught by my grandfather and father it was boater edicut to slow down for smaller boats and people fishing unless they wave you on to keep plaining so next time instead of getting angry or perturbed just throw up a hand and tell them to keep on hallin a** cause im shure they dont wanna stop flying down the river(lake) just as much as you wanna ride the wake they cause by slowing down(just my opinion not ment to affend anyone more of a editorial lol)...................keep fishin but if the only thing you catch is a buzz let someone else play captain on the trip home

Re: do people have no clue?

I've been around boats for as long as I can remember. I used to putt around on the Hudson with my dad in a small runabout. Worked on riverboats in West Virginia. I am currently learning how to sail.

I also do a lot of rowing (sculling). These boats are 26 feet long, about a foot wide, and sit about an inch of the water. The are also very unstable.

I am smart enough to realize that all bets are off when you are in open water ( ie: rivers, lakes.)

But what really pisses me off are "boaters" that just don't get what a "new wake zone" is.

These areas are designated "no wake" for a reason. Most are not arbitrably put there to **** off powerboaters.

Maybe there are boats moored to slips in the area maybe there are small crafts like rowing shells, canoes, kayaks, smail sailboats that are also using the water ways. Maybe there is a "mothers" beach in the area, with toddlers playing in the water.

Yet every freak'n time I am out, i get into an argument with some A-hole that, because he is either to stupid or self centered doesn't care that his actions either flipped my boat or swamped me.

When I lived on Long Island, not only was I swamped by a Jetskier, he came back and ran over my bow. All in a no wake zone. I called him to my dock to "discuss the matter" but most of these a-holes aren't open to "discussion" and run away.

I've boated, kayaked and rowed in many parts of the country, and this problem is not isolated to one area. It seems evey protected water way has this problem.

Re: do people have no clue?

The problem with the wakes is that people slow down when they are right NEXT to the smaller vessel. They don't realize that they do need to slow down far enough ahead of them to let the wake die behind their own boat and then pass the smaller boat with no wake. These things are not cars and people just don't understand that it takes longer to stop(no brakes!) and they are responsible for any damage caused by the wake they leave. I think the intentions are good they just don't understand the "process". I know I always slow down ever since being swamped in a rowboat by a 125ft party boat that never slowed down. He also took out about a dozen other small boats.

Re: do people have no clue?

Here on Lake Texoma (TX) some folks with their mega $$$ performance boats (duel and tri big block engines) know no other position than WOT ! ! ! Texoma is known as a "Rich Man's Lake". I've seen some of the muscle boats up close - they probably burn more high octane fuel during the first 10 mineuts of operation than I use with my 5.7L EFI equipped 21.5' cuddy cabin all day.

-signed by someone getting wake rocked on Texoma
