I'm thinking i doing the stator myself - i'm a little overwhelmed. I got the nut loose on flywhell and can get a wheel puller. But I'm wondering will i loose the timing or will it stay the same when I put the flywheel back on ?

suggestions ?

thanks !

Re: Do I need to do timing after stator replacement

i was out the other day - boat ran fine - then stopped to swim - never started again. So i tested at home and I have no spark anywhere.

I ohm'd the trigger and it comes back at 48-49 ohms - but when I ohm the stator - i get open loop on my meter, so I'm thinking there is a break in the stator wiring.

Sound right?

bought this earlier http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&vxp=mtr&item=160832403516#ht_500wt_1202
but when I was having trouble getting the nut loose I started to panic a little and asked the seller to cancel my transaction (something I never do). And I'm not sure I should trust this is new ? - what do you think - or should I just all CDI and get a new one.

I'm kinda weighing this all out - i could have 200-300 in a stator and do it myself or probably be about 600 installed at a shop. Family is in town for 3 weeks and really wanted to get them out of the boat before they go far away again.

also found this - does this site look legit and the pricing ? http://www.outboardignition.com/forcesearch.asp?cat=itemname&cval=3&hval=39&val=8

Check the flywheel magnet? Is it turning with the wheel or stuck to the stator?
Unhook the red lead to the rectifier and see if it sparks then.
That's the stuff.Mine won't fit.
You might find something on e-bay cheaper but it 's posssible it's bad.J

The magnets are attached to the underside of the flywheel, not readily visible until the flywheel is removed. Once the flywheel is off, you may find that one of the stator wires has contacted the underside of the flywheel and has worn through giving you the open circuit. Should that be the case, it would be a cheap and easy fix.

Re: Do I need to do timing after stator replacement

i got the flywheel off ! - thanks to God. The flywheel magnets look fine and the tested stator again - still open loop on the yellow / blue side on any connection. So I'm guessing that is my problem. it's a little rusty but I don't see any burned spots - not sure how they die but I'm guessing it's inside the coils where I can't see.

Part should be here tomorrow. Is there a simple way to keep the flywheel from moving when I'm tightening the nut ?

If you don't unhook the trigger when changing the stator? then no need to retime.
