Do I need a new water pump?

I just purchased a boat that has a 1968 Evenrude 65 hp engine. The model number on the engine is 65853B. I dont know boat engines and need to know if the water pump is working. I have been told that I should have water coming out of the exaust. When I have ran it there seems to be a small amount but nothing condiderable. I bought a new water pump (have not installed yet) but realized that the thermostat probably didnt open yet. Since there was little water from the exaust I only ran for at the most ten seconds at a time and never to operating temp. I did read on other posts that little water discharge may be common on this engine. Any info on if this is normal or if I need a new water pump would be appreciated.

trixie, to be on the safe side, change it.
Even if it is working, who knows for how long.

If my memory serves me right, there will be water coming out and at times it will look like a mist more than a spray on these engines, but you will be able to see it though.

Trixie
You can take the engine cover off and run motor. Put finger on the block or head and should be able to hold finger on it about 4 seconds with out pain or any kind of a burn.

Since you do not know what condition is I would change it. Many will tell you need to change every two years, I personaly never change mine in less than 10 and been boating over 50 years without a failure, but never run motor without water or with prop in the mud or sand.

Welcome to the Board and have Fun.

jThank you for the advice. I went ahead and changed it. The pump looked ok but the seals were shot.
Thank you
