Do I need a new prop?

Hi all, I have a 1964, 9.5 that I picked up last year. Runs good but the prop was pretty beat up. I filed all the edges to smooth them out and it seems to work just fine but I'm just wondering how you know when to replace a prop? None of the chips or nicks are over 1/4 inch. Interested in your thoughts, thanks

Repairing a prop diameter by filing out the damage, removing any "cupping" on the prop and reducing it's diameter will increase the WOT RPM of the motor. As long as it does not then exceed the maximum RPM for that particular motor then in that respect you are O.K.
The bigger potential issue is that the prop is now out of balance. This will throw excess and undue stress on the lower unit seals, gears etc. This may not be noticeable at first but over time it could cause expensive damage.
Personally I would get a new / used good condition prop and have that one repaired by a prop shop as a spare. Always good to have a spare prop with you.
