Do coils come in packs of 1 or 2?

I need to replace my cracked coils to fix my intermittent spark but the evinrude parts website says quantity required is 2. Does that mean I add 2 to cart or it comes in a pack of 2? Very frustrating, i had blue spark in both cylinders, then it went to one, and after a while it went to the other one. I didnt switch the wires around or anything i'm positive. I can see the coils are cracked so I think that could be part of the problem. I also have to check the spark plug wires, and sand and adjust the points. I'm almost done and I believe I'll have a strong runner. Not bad for the side of the road...

I know I need 2 to complete the motor, but I’m not sure if they come in packs of 2 if I have to put quantit as 2.

" bad out of the box "------Not likely.-----Manufacturing / testing today is much improved over years ago.------The mechanical / electrical ability of the average person is going the other way !------My opinion and that will not change

I take it you’ve had good luck with the sierras? I can certainly save some money that way. I’ve spent almost $200 on the motor and I’d like to stay under that number... I agree with the mechanical ability comment, it’s all “throw it away and buy a new one” nowadays. I have taught myself how to work on motors, and I learn something new each time. I did a complete carb rebuild, I cleaned all the passages and stopped the flooding issue, I fixed the gas leak, freed up the steering bracket (ever wonder what 60 year old grease looks like, it’s like glue), along with some miscellaneous other small fixes. The last part intimidates me the most, the ignition system. I’m worried about adjusting the points and such. Looks easy to screw up. Same with timing, I am not sure how to set timing on a small 3hp. Hopefully somebody has advice about timing and points on these small motors somewhere.

It is easy if you understand how a magneto works !!-----Timing can be set and checked using the timing marks on the flywheel and magneto plate.------Do some research on --------universal magneto ----using google.-----A host of information to learn.-----This magneto was installed on motors for nearly 40 years so it is a " good one " in my opinion.

eBay has one and 2 packs I am sure IBOATS can sell you what you need . I would change both

one kart item will get you 2 coils

Those coils appear to be coming from Hong Kong, would that make the quality/reliability less? I live in the US not Canada but the product is still cheaper. It is like $30 for 1 coil here. Hopefully someone has an idea about cheap coils from Hong Kong. I will definitely order the ones from Canada eBay though.

I have never been taught by someone else, just lots of reading and videos, I understand the magneto for the most part. Glad to hear you think I have a good magneto.

WOW!! Thank you so much, I’m definitely going to be reading those! I appreciate you looking all of those up for me. I am waiting a few weeks to work on the ignition because it is still cold right now, and my hands don’t work great in 20-30 degrees. I am excited because that’s all I have left to do. Hopefully I can get away with filing the points and cleaning then instead of complete replacement. They look good and clean and aren’t corroded. Maybe the gap is wrong. My spark plug wires are a little cracked in places, perhaps that’s one of my problems. Coils definitely will need replacement, I think they cracked when the motor was sitting unused, maybe I can get away with resealing the outer plastic to keep water out. I will test them with my multimeter to see if they are still good. I will update back when I get started on the motor again.

Don't bother trying to salvage these old coils.----A colossal waste of time.----Every one of these magnetos has cracked ( scrap ) coils or a new set installed already.

those are great little motors if mechanically sound to start with (compression must be checked as indicated above….)

yet bad compression may be just a bad head gasket ($5-10)

why not go all the way if you fix the coils change all the plug wires & booths with new solid core metallic plug wires (no carbon stuff) small price to pay for peace of mind out on the lake

I used Prufrex (German) coils in my latest project, a Ducktwin (basically the same motor as yours). They are expensive but IMHO the best. When you're at it, REPLACE the wires!

Even if the multimeter says they are okay? I’ve alresdy spent close to $200 but hopefully I am almost done with the expenses.
