I was wondering that on the way to work this morning... They always have that big motor on the back turning the cement bin.. but is that motor also powering the axles?

Anyone know?

Sean

Yes they have 2 motors- the trucks are the same as any other with that cab. The drum is an add-on by a specialist builder.

Old mixer trucks had two motors. They now have one motor and a hydrolic pump to turn the drum. Now days, the hydrolic pumps are constant, powered by a shaft from the carrier motor.

The big motor on the back powers the truck, and a hyd pump to power a hyd motor, to turn the cement drum.

Thats a new development I've not seen yet- usually when you hjave a hydraulic PTO engaged it's so hard to change gear while driving you have to turn it off-and they have a max rpm rating of about half what the main truck engines do.

Generally the barrel is driven by a hydraulic motor that runs off a pump driven by the diesel engine that powers the drive line. Does that answer you question or just confuse ya......like it did me when I re-read it.

Just to be hyper correct . . . They are not Cement Trucks. They are Concrete Transit Mixers. Cement is the powder and is carried in a very different truck that is sometimes called a Cement Train or a Bulk Tanker. Concrete is the combo of the cement, aggregate (rock and sand) and water. Transit Mixers vary quite a bit from region to region. LT has the most common configuration down though. One engine and one motor. Motors are driven, engines drive . . .

Transit Mixer

If you look at the picture of the mixer that Qc posted, behind the front bumper is a hydraulic pump. That pump is connected directly to the front of the engine at the crankshaft. That is what turns the mixer drum.

Yup, most of them now are flywheel mounted and you can't see them, but in this case there is a reasonable view of the pump. You can even see the lines going under the truck and coming out into the hydraulic motor in front of the drum . . .

Hey, there's a post from clanton. Cool.
Somehow its fitting that the subject would include hydrolics. :)

Yep, mixer bowls turn the opposite way in the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern......

What I am interested to know is: what does 1 cubic metre of concrete weigh?

Cheers
Phillip
