Of course my real test is mooring. I can moor in the lake for a week and not take on a drop of water.

You must have a new dripless shaft packing then, because all inboards should have a drip every ten seconds or so.

This isn't an inboard he's dealing with, he's got an Inboard/Outboard set up.

no boat should take on any water. period

it is normal with older wooden boats (big ones) but that is it....and in a perfect world...they should not either

NOT TRUE! any thru hull shaft will leak slightly!

Just out of curiosity, do you leave the drain plug out of that tub so the water drains out or leave it in :D? I had to ask.

I have a keyboard that is going out. Sometimes the keys do not work all time. Funny though.

I only read responses through the first page and was surprised no one picked up on this-If your through hull fittings are sealed with SILICONE, then it's undoubtedly going to be taking on water. Silicone has no good reason to be on a boat and will undoubtedly leak. You need to seal all through hull fittings with a marine grade sealant such as 3M 4200.

That's true and the real task will be getting rid of any silicone residue so the marine sealant will stick to the surfaces. Lots of luck!

Rain could be a source as another poster mentioned.

Well yes, but that would apply to all boats, not just I/Os. That's what the OP seems to be asking about.

A properly maintained boat with an I/O will not take on water simply because it is an I/O. An I/O does not, by design, leak water into the boat.

no, however, it will slowly drain money from the owner's bank account.

They should drip when the prop and shaft are spinning, not when the boat is shut off is my understanding.

My shafts are not dripless and not a drop of water enters the boat as it sits in the slip, other than the rain.

Also people comment about not a drop of water in their bilge, ever. Lucky you, I always have some water, as mentioned above my bilge pump doesn't get every drop out. We had some nasty weather the past couple of days, so I will head over and check the boat out, but rarely if ever is there anymore than the bit thats always been in there.
