i have a 1969 johnson 115, and when the motar heats up to opperating temp. when you push the trottle wide open the distributir advance arm does not advance. i have pulled the flyweel and replaced the wearable nylon ring on the distributir base plate, coated it in 2 stroke oil. i have also disasembled the whole arm cleaned, and coated that in 2 stroke oil. when the motar is not running, or still cool, it workes perfectlly, so i dont understand why at opperating temp. it binds up and i have to advance it by hand. the motar does not overheat and has new waterpump, thermostate, ehaust housing gasket, and has 120 compresion in all 4 cylanders. i dont know if the bearings on the camshaft are gone and causing the center of the motar to heat up and binding the distributar or what. i have been having this problem for 2 plus years and no one can figure this out. please help!

Re: distributir advance problem

That is a common problem usually solved by cleaning and relubricating the base plate, which you have already done.. You are missing something in there.

well i know that i shouldnt use greese because of how it gums up in heat. that is why i used 2 stroke oil, is there something else that i should be using? because this is the 3rd or 4th time that i have done this and it just keep happening!

Re: distributir advance problem

also an outboard machanic told to to remove the anti reverse spring because there hard to find a new one and the fact that if it breaks it would cause a lot of problems in there. would no anti reverse sping cause that?

Re: distributir advance problem

Well that's some odd advice. But no, not being in there won't cause your problem. But it might surprise you some day when it cranks up running backwards. That's what it's in there for.

Re: distributir advance problem

thats what i figured. but is there any reason why after cleaning and re lubing the base plate it would still bind up and opperating temp.?

Re: distributir advance problem

Do not remove the anti reverse spring. Coat the nylon retaining ring and its groove with oil only (as you've done). Use a thin coating of anti corrosive grease on the timer base brass sleeve bearing and the top main bearing seating surface.

With a new nylon retaining ring, the usual cause of a sticking timer base is that one (or more) of the "L" retaining clamps are too tight.

With the timer base in the sticking position, use a long thin screwdriver to gently pry up on the clamps, one at a time. This procedure may reveal the culprit BUT....................

The best way to check for the offending clamp(s) is to remove the flywheel, and with the timer base sticking, loosen a screw on one of the clamps. When the offending clamp(s) are located insert a thin shim (washer) under the clamp.

Be sure to torque the flywheel nut to to specified 105 foot pounds, otherwise the flywheel key will most certainly shear.

Re: distributir advance problem

There is a heavy spring in the linkage arm between the throttle arm and the timing arm. Is it missing or broken?

Re: distributir advance problem

nope its in great shape actually. and all the nylon bushing/washers are in great shape. i pulled the whole arm apart, cleaned, and re-lubed with 2 stroke oil. the guy i got the boat off of has greese in there so i though thats where the problem was but it still bound up after it was gone.

Re: distributir advance problem

grrrr i went out on the boat yesterday, and as soon as the motor warmed up is started to bind again! so i bent the clips up on at a time and it did nothing. so i belive the problem is heat realated because i noticed some discoleration on the crankshaft where the rotor sencor sits. and when the motor cools down the arm moves free, so know i am back to aquar 1 anybody got some new idea?

Re: distributir advance problem

i also used anti seize on the brass sleeve in the base-plate, is sayes to use non carosive greese the anti seize should be all right in there? it works at temps up to 1600 and my pops always tells me if it gets that hot to just throw the motor in the trash haha
