Discovered a bummer with FireFox v10

This morning I tried to open a .jpg attachment in a trusted email. I got the 'Open With' box and guess what. There is no Windows Picture and Fax Viewer available as a choice. I went back out and opened a picture file from my harddrive and it opened right up in the desired application.

I googled this, as I have other FF issues and as usual I find posts and solutions that are many years old and for much older versions of FF.

Anyone have a solution for this. HEY!!! I like and I want WINDOWS PICTURE AND FAX VIEWER. It has always worked well and I can't see any reason, whatsoever, to have to change!!!!

Take a look at this. I believe it'll do exactly what you want.

Since you've made the change to FF take a look at AdBlock Plus too. Blocks ads making browsing faster and way, way less annoying.

halfmoa, when I click on the add button it give me the message that 'this add-on has not been updated for your version of FF' Of course, my version is 10.0

I'll check Adblock Plus. I thought that FF already had an ad/popup blocker? I do not seem to be plagued with them.

Thanks

ps, where is Lake Shelbyville?

That's too bad. Sounds like just what you needed.

Lake Shelbyville is in Central Illinois. I drive past a recreational lake and a strictly fishing lake just to get to it. No houses on the lake, all shore owned by the government with woods past those, and I own 12 acres that butt up to the Corp's ground. I'd love to leave my boat on the shore and go up to my campsite but it's about 1/4 of a mile through the woods and I'd really hate for it to be gone in the morning. There's a sand launch just down the road but I'm too chicken to use it without having 4wd.

My property is just northwest of Timberlake Golf Course close to the middle of the map. I know I'm partial to the area cause I grew up there but I've yet to see a lake I'd rather boat on that's reasonably close. It's super busy on the weekends after school lets out (vacationers) but when school is in session or during the week it's amazing. My wife couldn't believe it the first time I took her out there. She likes cruising and looking at pretty houses but if you go out on Lake Shelbyville on the right days you'll have the entire lake to yourself. We call it "owning the lake". 11,000 acres+ and no other boaters gets a little unnerving when the engine stutters though. Everytime I run out of fuel and have to switch tanks I age a month or two...

I normally use FF but had to revert to IE to update my Garmin GPS. FF wanted me to download to my computer instead of just running it. The maps update took about 3 hours with high speed Comcast. That is massive w/all the new maps. I like FF but ??? it has it's limits.

I tried FF as a last resort to reloading my OS. IE7 had gone bananas on me and an update to IE8 did nothing to straighten things out. As bad as IE was, it still worked a bit, especially if I did not try to open several windows.

I did make a mistake, I believe, when I downloaded FF. I told it to be my default browser. The result was that all of my IE icons now open FF and I can't get back to IE.

I think I will follow through with my original plan to install a new HD and reload a fresh copy of XP, then update IE, download FF and not let it be my default. That way I will be able to access IE when the need arises.

I can't believe that there are not any current remedies for the Windows Picture and Fax viewer situation.

I don't understand what FireFox has to do with opening an email attachment.

If you get the "Open with" screen, there should be a way to browse your computer and locate the Windows viewer.

I do this all the time Boom. And it still opens .jpg files fine. I'm on FF 10.0 and XP SP3 fully updated. When you get "open with" does it have a browse button? I posted how to access IE in your other FF thread.

BTW - what are you using for email? Like Don S said, it's not a browser problem.

Ok, I am trying to open a straight forward .jpg from Yahoo Mail. If I /download/open it from my main computer, using IE7, it straight away opens in WP&F viewer.

When I do it from my surfing machine, running FF, I get the box that says 'open with'. When I click on that it displays various programs such as Word Perfect, notepad, quattro pro 11 loaders, real player, windows media player, etc. There is no Windows picture and fax viewer displayed.

If I hit the browse button from within that box it opens up Windows Explore to the Programs folder. There is no WP&F viewer listed. If I do a 'search' for WP&FV, nothing comes up.

Now, if I just simply open a picture that has been saved on my Harddrive, it opens straight away in WP&FV. Therefore I know that it is there but must be embedded in something else and not identified as a seperate program by it's name. FF is plain and simple not seeing WP&FV!

Try going to your "start" menu and select "set program access and defaults" ....select "custom" and hit the downscope arrow.
You should see an option to select either FF or IE.

Tim, under 'start' I see no option to 'set program access and defaults'!

OK. I was going to post a screen shot of my start menu, but can't.
Not sure what to suggest.

In firefox click tools->options->applications...Go to .jpg and select what you want to use...You may have to browse for it but once you set it it will work like it used to...

Thinking harder about it, are you using a web based email or outlook for your mail??? Windows Vista that I use has a "Set associations" window that I can assign a .jpg to open with photoshop 8...I know XP has the same thing but I haven't had xp in years and I can't remember where it is...

Re: Discovered a bummer with FireFox v10

I think Boomyal said he was using Yahoo for email. A web-based email.

File association can be done on a system wide basis by Start, Control Panel, Folder Options. Scroll down to jpg, jpeg, and jpe and set them all to associate with Win Pic & Fax Viewer.

On my system firefox associations do their own thing sometimes...If it doesn't work doing it globally in the windows file associations it might be firefox causing the issue...

Well I hope someone/sometime/somewhere/ comes up with an add-on that works with v10.0. FF plain cannot see WP&FV. I did check in control panel/folders and WP&FV is globally declared for all .jpeg's and .jpg's.

Odd that FF can see other windows applications but not the Viewer?

Don't know about that GA. As I mentioned, when you go to download (open) the picture, it is the FF 'open with' apparatus that cannot\won't find\access the 'viewer'.
