Re: disc or drum brakes??

If Champion Trailer advises against going with electric, as well as a number of folks on this forum - personally I'd listen.

From your posts it sounds like you've made up your mind and are looking for moral support. Bottom line is - there isn't a cheap way to get by for a trailer that gets dunked. Electric over hydraulic, (the system Bruceb has pictured) where the electrical part doesn't get submerged would be your best bet. The down side is that it's expensive.

Wilee,

I'm almost laughing out loud because I think you're right... I really want folks to tell me it's ok!! :)

It's always tough though on boards because you get a lot of very varying opinions and it's tough to sort through which one to take...

it's a good point about listening to champion though...

Re: disc or drum brakes??

I had heard that Fulton was selling electric brakes that were made to work on boat trailers, but since I am in a salt water area, I wouldn't consider it, they may work ok in freshwater. Surge brakes, if adjusted and maintained correctly, can work fine, esp with lighter loads. I got the spindle lube axle and drum brake package from Champion trailers 2 summers ago and it still works fine. Whatever brake system you get keep in mind they all need regular maintenance to keep working. I went with drums because at that time I was hearing a lot of troubles with disc systems sticking and overheating. You can replace the Tie Down 10" drums for 130 a pair, I plan to do that every 4 seasons or so. The best is supposed to be the Kodiak system, which can be bought in several levels of corrosion protection. If you are in freshwater, the drums will work fine and local mechanics are more familiar with them.

I bought the Kodiak SS 10" six lug brakes two years ago. I bought them online and installed them in place of older bronze worn out models. Cost me about $400 including hubs and seals and grease. (And an afternnon)

Havent touched them since and the look like the day they were installed.

My friend bought a boat with drums and a rinsing system. After four months (Salt water boating) he's having problems and surface rust is apparent where the shoes rub the case.
