DIPSTICK ! Mercruiser 888 Ford 302

My Mercruiser 888 dipstick is missing. Nobody seems to know where it could have gone. No big deal I thought, I'll just order a new one......

Yeah Right.

Are the dip sticks for a Ford 302 (car engine) the same? Nobody has a 888 dipstick anywhere that I've found, anybody have any idea? Can I order a dipstick for a 302 Mustang and it will work?

I understand I can order one from Jegs by length, I don't have the dipstick to measure, and that spec doesn't appear to be in the manual.

Motor is in a 76 Glasply.

I have a 76 888. It's stored across town, however. If no one else responds, I can measure my DS but it won't be for a few days.

I was going to say, someone here has to have the same motor they can give you a measurement from.

I think the only thing that would throw off the dipstick reading is if the tube length is different for accessibility reasons on marine vs automotive, but you are best to have someone with the same motor give you a measurement.

If all else fails,
drain the oil, then refill with the recomended amount for that pan and filter.
run the engine for a bit then let it set for an hour. take any dipstick that will fit and insert it fully. pull it out and make a mark where the oil level is. then you can make another make 1 inch below that one. there is your full and add lines.
Its not easy but it will work.

Well, wrong forum or not it's iboats to the rescue!
As long as you don't mind help from a lowly OMC owner I have a 175hp stringer that has the Ford 302. I just measured my dipstick and it's 16.5" from the tip to where it seats against the dipstick tube. Hope this helps!

I appreciate the help guys. If anyone out there has the exact motor as mine and could measure, it would be great. If you remember next time your at your boat WIZE ONE it would be much appreciated.

Im thinking 16.5" sounds right, Im trying to picture the old dipstick in my head. I appreciate the help.
