It's a square image that looks like a partially filled in jigsaw puzzle. It's made to be scanned. I guess they are kind of like a newer bar code.

What exactly are they? And how do you read them?

It's QR code. First used in the auto industry for things like registration stickers. Now they put it on packages and products as basically a web address.. Smartphones have QR readers which you can take a pic of the code with the reader and then it will take you to whatever website..

Most folks call them 3D bar codes but actual name is Quick Response (QR) code. Information is read horizontally and vertically, and a camera phone equipped with the correct reader application can scan the image of the QR code to display text

Not being a pain but I call them 2d we use them for product ID on labels at work to make sure right label on bottle. They contain all info as barcode and will replace the bar code in the future as they contain more info and easier to read than a bar code.

Agree, both the previous barcode type used vertical bars and then the new type which uses a pattern in a square are both 2D, but most folks call one 2D and the other 3D. They actually make real 3D bar codes which appear like the ones previously discussed (Edit: and have 3 dimensional facets). They contain much more info and are read with laser scanners. The DoD started using true 3D to track munitions and other high dollar and complex equipment.
