difference in 76 55horse and newer 55

Want to repower with newer outboard and want to know if i can go bigger or have to go smaller. Boat is rated at 55 any help is appreciated

55 means 55, ns. Do not go bigger.

Motors circa 1985 and newer are rated at the prop.So you may be able to pick up
3 to 5 hp with 55 at the prop.3 cylinder 55s prior to 89 are 50cu in. Thus probably lighter than 89 up at 56 cu in.
