I have a 1959 Cd-16 serial# 1974334. Motor has been sitting for quite a while. So cleaned the carb and some other general maint to the motor. Im not quite sure if i have the slow and high idle jets set correctly but it idles and revs up great. question is, when i try to put it in gear either forward or reverse it dies. and that set on the tiller where it says shift. But i can put it in gear and start it and it's fine for a period then dies. Any help i would greately appreciate.

did you have a look at the ignition? you may have bad coils, dirty points etc.

I didnt look at the coils or the points. could that be causing my dying problems?

generally when you bring one of the oldies out of retirement, carb, coils, points is the place to start. (read the top secret file at the beginning of this forum......it has tons of good info!!)

.....and you should really do a compression test before putting any money into it, good chance its ok, but if its not, you will be dissappointed.

You might also check the condition of the lower unit. See if water is getting in the oil also. Parts that put an extra amount of strain on a motor can make it die when puting it in gear. Does the prop spin easy when its in neutral?

Prop spins free when in nuetral. I did notice some play in it when in gear. i'll do a compression check on it. I know it seems to have a ton of it. I also pulled the spark plugs and checked for fire prior to starting, and it had the blue crisp (word im looking for) spark shooting from the electrode.

Cool. How do the coils look? Are they newer looking or are they cracked all to heck?

I havent had the opportunity to check the coils or points. I need to get a puller. I know it has new plugs and the wires look new. The gentlemen i bought it off of said it ran great when he put it up. That was 10 years ago.

Idle mixture is still too lean.

'Best' idle speed mixture is too lean, once the motor has 'load' shifted into gear, the idle mixture must be readjusted richer again until you reach 'best idle' while in gear.

From this point the idle must be adjusted again richer to provide the additional fuel necessary to accelerate crisply while under load. Test acceleration, any hesitation, lean miss, or cough, make slight adjustment richer on the idle and retest.

Repeat to perfection.

End result may be as far as 1/4 turn richer than 'best' idle in Neutral.

Re: Dies when put in gear

Im at aloss. I've adjust like what was printed in how to adjust carb. runs great till kicked in gear. dies. so i did a compression test 90 top 100 bottom seems low to me but i dont know. Took top off and took the plate off the fly wheel. everything looks brand new coils points and i think its called condensor probally wrong name but u guys no what im talking about. put it all back together and decided to check the lower unit. Full of grey syrup so i know what intrusion. Looked at the thermostat it works but looks terrible. beginning to thimnk this motor is gonna kick my butt before it's all good. Were can i find a parts diagram so i can order some parts. I guess i will go ahead and replace all the above mentioned. and seals for lower unit. The sad thing is when u take the top off this motor it looks practically new.

if the coils look new, and you have good spark ( yer compression is above average!), look to rebuild the carb, it needs to be done anyway, since the motor hasnt run in ten years. dont give up the old girl! .....does that motor use a pressure tank?
i have a cd 13 that im working on, and a cd 14 that runs like a top, just needed a carb kit.

Yes it has a pressure tank. It works great for as i can tell. the fuel filter stay full of fuel while it running and i let it sit for an hour came back out and the tank was still pressured up. Can you set the timing on these motors?

I would check the gap on the points again. Sometimes after they've been replaced, they loose a little bit of the gap.

Needle settings are 1 1/2 turns out on the low speed and 1/2 to 3/4 on the high speed. Yea, your motor was the last year of the pressure tank. They went single line in 1960.

I will. Going to get me a puller this evening. Can the timing be adjusted on the CD-16?
