Did I flood it, did I mis use the remote, was it old fuel, or all of the above?

Try and start this motor using the correct procedure.-------If it does not start there is something wrong with the motor.-----Do the trouble shooting !-----You do not need to put in new plugs every week on a modern outboard.
Cheers, what worries me is why was there so much oil going into the sea water? I realise now I should have pushed the key. It says maximum 5 seconds. But I held it more like 9 seconds a couple of times, I hope I havnt damaged the starter motor?

also, what would have caused the mini explosion/backfire like sound? It must have had some pressure as I saw a small quick explosion flame and the pressure popped the oil lid on the engine cover, like a POP sound. Not that the flap locks, but still, gave me a fright.

What Im asking is, the backfire type POP that blew the oil flap on the engine cover up, could this have caused catstrophic damage to the cylinder? Or is it more likely old fuel just eventually igniting?

Im a bit wary to fire it up with fresh fuel if its damaged. Sadly I dont have the tools to strip the engine. If it does fire up, but only running on two cyl not three, the power loss should be noticeable? I know the top end speed of the setup, but I havnt had this one out running just as of yet. Hence my slight paranoia post "POP" backfire and why there was so much unmixed oil going into the water?

A simple compression test will show if there is an issue with a cylinder. Pull plugs out and look inside also. Just a few drops of oil in the water spreads out quickly and looks like a bunch, kinda like blood at a crime scene !!

I havnt had a chance to get the engine to water to test it yet (off site). But you are right about oil.

Clearly its trying to add some oil to a likely flooded engine, but not sure why the oil pump was working until it fires up, or does it add oil prior to firing up? Lastly where is the oil likely to have been exiting the engine into the water?

I will pull the sparks and inspect.

We dont have seafoam here, just the mercury/quckksilver and the equivalent line of yamaha additives. Quickleen is said to be Mercs version of seafoam. Should I flush the fuel line with some of this stuff? its been sitting since we failed to start it incorrectly, I did disconnect the hoses and tilt it so hopefully the old fuel has left the carb, just worried the oil might have gummed things up.

My gut tells me it was a combo of not knowing how to choke with the key pushed in, not knowing where to set the neutral idle speed lever and most importantly, I suspect it was old fuel
