Deteriorated wiring

The wiring for my 1978 200 Mercury is shot and I need to replace it. It has the electric start conversion kit.. my question is do I have to leave that or can I remove or undo it?

The wiring is shot on my 1978 200 Mercury outboard. My question is can I do away with the the conversion kit (starter wires) or does it have to stay?

If the wiring is shot then chances are the rectifier and or switchbox are too; the first diagram is your motor the second the manual version.
