deteriorated coil covering on elgin 7.5hp

I was wondering if the covering on the coils can be removed and replaced. It has deteriorated <br />to the degree that bad connections have become an issue. I know the part # is X7500. If <br />anybody can help me with a solution I would appreciate it. I tried to cross-reference the part <br />number to find a replacement coil, but I haven't had much success. This is a '47 Elgin 7.5hp.

Hi Tom: Go to the Antique Outboard Motor Club website (aomci.org) and click on their Ask A Member board. Someone there can probably help you or tell you where you can get a new part. Good Luck!
