Give me some opinions on a good depth finder for under $300.00 I fish on lakes less than 30 feet deep so it has to be great in shallow water. Waiting to hear from everyone........Thanks for the replys.

Yo, Stone. I don't think you would get better performance per buck for under $300 than the Eagle FishEasy. Amazing performance and features for under $100. There may be subtleties that I don't appreciate in others under $300. . . the Eagle Ultra for example has a bigger screen and is several features up on the FishEasy, but for three times the price. My FishEasy serves me well.

smooth waters.
JB

If you want to get a good finder go Lowrance with their x65 or better x85.
I personally have a Garmin 160 and I am very, very pleased with. Great details, accuracy, plus an option to have a flasher display next to sonar so you can see in real time. Price on newer 160 blue is around $ 210.

I have the humminbird 100sx its ok for depth but it doesnt seem to pick up fish very well. The depth is a little wierd in depths less then 3-4 feet it blanks out and such, but again its shallow depth.

I have heard from a friend to go with a garmin, I wouldnt recommend a 100 sx it just doesnt seem to pick fish up, I use mine for depth pretty much.

-John

I have a wide optic Hummin and like it so far. it has some nice features but I have not had the oppertunity to compare it head to head in the water with someone else working the same water. Has anyone done this. I mean a real head to head in a body of water going over the same area to see how the compare on measuring structure as well as marking fish in the water.

Also has anyone got any experience with the Pinpoint line of finders????

Hitman

Hmm. I thought you meant depth finder. If you meant fish finder the Lowrance X65 or Garmin 160 are excellent.

JB

Have to go with JB on the Lowrance units. Mine works flawlessly and marks everything in the water. Works well in shallow and deep water.

------------------
Still waters and tight lines

Oldsalt

I agree with J.B. and Johnshan. I own a
humminbird wide100...Avoid at all cost. It
works fine at trollin speed, but can't even track depth at planing speed! This could make navigation somnewhat tricky. Go with the Lowrance X65. I have no experiance with it, but it HAS to be better than the Humminbird.

I have a 300TX HUMMER,Works great for me.I like the triple angle transducer. It took a little time to get it adjusted to pick up the bottom on step, but it works great at medium speeds. Are their any units that pick up the bottom at full speed?

Stone

I have a Eagle Magna View. I purchesed it at Wall-mart for $230.00. I am very pleased with it. I fish a Bass tournaments every weekend. It will track you depth when traveling wide open. It has a has water tempeture, it will chart the water temp for the day and has all kinds of other depths, and fish alarms. It will also will zoom in and out.
It is also easy to use. I have very good luck with eagle.
If you have a boat that will reach speeds of 50 to 70 mph I reconmend using a Flasher when traveling for tracking your depth.

Markcv

Well, I can only speak for that of which I own and use. I is a 5 year old Humminbird WIDE-3D. I purchesed it originally because at the marine store that 3D stuff looked really cool. But thats how I arrived at buying it. Installation was a snap. However I did not experiment with mounting location to verify that I had selected optimal position on the transom. (whatever you end up buying this is critical) The product for the price performs rather well, Sometimes it will ock up and I need to power reset the device. It has on screen adjustments for sensativity, and ability to zoom to a user selected depth. I do sometimes loose the sscreen when hard cornering, but at this stage, I am usualy just watching depth and not watching the fish icons on the screen. On a 1-10 scale I would give this product an 8.5 !

Re: Depth Finders..........

I like my Hummingbird 200DX. It costs about $220 CA which is about $150 US. It came with additional temperature sensor which comes in handy for serious fishing especially when you leave it loose so you can check surface and at various depths. This is a real bonus! Pretty well any finder will detect properly at higher speeds as long as the transducer is properly adjusted so this probably isn't a factor. My finder has a zoom, swivel and angle base, and easily connects and disconnects to bring into the house. Generally the higher the detail, bigger screen, comfortability and detection ability are important factors.
