A hole in the water surrounded by wood that you dump money in.

Yes, most of us know 'the facts of boating'. Many newcomers to boating end up learning those facts in an unexpected way.

It is an obsession . . . it is a pastime . . . it is also a skill.

If you want to address the money issue . . try a sailboat. Much less expensive. Did you know that I used to use about 8 gallons of gas a year with my sailboat?

I've found that it feels better if I calculate everything in "Boat Bucks".
So instead of it costing $200 per motor/drive to winterize it only costs 2 "Boat Bucks" per side.
Then shrink wrap & storage is another 4 "Boat Bucks".

See? A lot less painful. :D;)

...while not being necessarily cheaper than standing in a cold shower tearing up $100 bills. I do enjoy being on the boat much more. :)

Re: Definition of BOAT

sometimes i wonder why i even bother owning a boat. i bought the boat to go fishing where you can not get to with out a boat then i see some spotty little kid with a walmart rod pulling in a huge bass off the side near the boat docks. ok the ride was fun and we did catch a few but it seems that the fish dont understand that i have paid thousands to catch them where this little kid has maybe 20 bucks total for a trophy bass. to add insult we had to go ask him what he was using as bait so we might learn from our mistakes.

Hmmmm I refer you to this comment of your in another thread.....
I don't even own a boat yet. This question is for a future boat. But it will be an I/O swim-platform model something like a:

1. Sting Ray 19-22 foot cuddy
2. Bayliner 19-22 foot cuddy
3. Monterey 19-22 foot cuddy

all CG-approved for flotation and all made after 1990
in pre-owned condition

I don't think a MerCruiser 3.0 fails often anyway. I am not so worried about the boat swamping so much as the possibility of the motor going out off shore. Cuddies are supposed to be good for light offshore use.

Light offshore use means seldom used offshore, kept close to shore and for shore trips within 100 miles up or down the coast. Also offshore boating under the best possible sea and weather conditions.

I own a few and once maintained they are great. I have 2 16 footer's and a 14 footer (not even going to count the small wooden race boat that is begging to be restored). Boating gets cheaper with every outing. If you invest 25 or 30K and use it 20 days a season then yes, it is costly. If you use it daily during the season the cost per use is less.

Boats are all about maintenance.

Sailboats are cheap, inflatables are cheap and aluminum rowboats are the cheapest.

You can't complain about dumping money into something you yet to own!

That's right, my friend. See Below.

I know some guys that spend over a million on a boat and several hundred thousand every year on her. They all have a big smile on their face.

+3 on Best of All times. After being out of the water for 2 years due to not being able to catch up with my dad when he goes out on his boat, I miss it a lot, and that's why I'm going to get my own..
