For whatever reason bucks are shedding their antlers early this year. Ususally we don't see them until December or so. Any who, our German Shepard has become very adept at finding them and dragging them home from the surrounding conservation area. (I live in the middle of 6000+ state owned acres.)

He LOVES to chew on them and I'm wondering if there are any adverse side effects to it. I'd hate to take them away after he's had so much fun finding them and bringing them back. He really is like a kid with a new toy.

I wouldn't think there'd be anything at all to hurt him. Other than hurting your abillity to use them as a rattle call, let him have 'em.

As long as the gums are healthy, no bleeding. Just like us! It's my understanding that antlers bring some good coin. Why let the dog eat them??!! Our deer are just out of velvet. I can't believe they're dropping them already. Never heard of it this early. Is that a southern thang?

Naw, never happened.

Our old shepard would chew everything if we let him, usually all he got was a mouth full of sawdust and bark + bleading gums..

(I think there was beaver somewhere in the family tree)

An item used in a lot of Chinese herbal medicines....they buy huge amounts worldwide.
If you are worried check with a veterinarian, but there is nothing that would hurt a dog and much that might be beneficial.

My local pet supply house sells antlers cut into 6"-8" pieces as a replacement for the dreaded rawhides.

Yeah, you're missing a period at the end of your sentence!:D Some people get anal about spelling and grammar. I think there even was a thread about it.....

It was missing a Question mark . I repaired it, this is satirical, right. I am kinda new here.

Only 'cause you asked....:)...you're missing another question mark. ;)

The way I read this thread was that someone tried to correct someone's spelling, and then someone else pointed out quite gently, that it is always dangerous sport to do that because when you make an inevitable grammatical "oooops" in your attempt to play grammar cop, that will inevitably draw a "j'accuse!" .

I don't think that was pointed at you. :D

Bucks dropping antlers in mid October. That just seems absurd. The only factor that triggers whitetail rutting activity is the length of daylight, how warm the weather got in spring has nothing to do with it. I think the conservation guys are feeding you a line of BS.

Actually Flathead, it can be a number of things that trigger early drops, depending on where you are in Montana, we have had drops as early as late September, often times it is due to hot weather and the nutrients that deer are getting in their diet, during the long hot spring and summers, nutrient intake is low and they strength of the horn base deteriorates causing early dropping of the antler. I work very closely with our game dept. on various types of studies. And believe it or not, most of the studies I work on are located right here in the Flathead Valley!

Well the whole Midwest has been under severe to extreme drought this summer. Still in it, actually. Could that do it?
