Re: Deep freeze

Just unplugged it after 15 hours. I know it's overkill and a couple hours would work. But, I figured nuts to it. Haven't had one blow out..... yet. But it isn't that often it gets plugged in...... It' a factory unit.....

I think they just put on warmer underwear here...their $120 jeans are still down at their knees. I see them every single day downtown.

YUP!

I try to not keep the trucks plugged in for more than 2 hours because you only get so many hours out of a block heater and they are a #$#@ to replace, especially when you need it and its cold. :mad-new:

As a mechanic, I have replaced many of these but to tell you the truth they last a very long time. I have had vehicles that I have kept plugged in for weeks, year after year. Some I've had for 20 years and the block heaters are still going.
The biggest killer of a block heater is a bad connection at the block end. Cords should be replaced every few years.

When i was in basic (Oct 1964) at the Great Lakes (Chicago). When we washed our uniforms we had to hang them outside before bringing them in to what was called the drying room.If you bumped them (wool) while hanging outside the garment would literally snap apart. It got so cold. This is no fairy tale. It's the real deal.

WOW, if it gets that cold that things are snapping off I'd be petrified to go to the bathroom outside! Just curious, on the flip side how warm does it get in the summer and how long is your season?

What keeps one in Saskatchewan Canada? Oil industry up there? You are seriously way off the grid!

^^^^

I am sure Ricohman will add to this but Sask is a huge producer of wheat, canola oil/gas, potash, copper, gold ETC as well for being off the grid no more than your northern states.

Having lived in Minnesota and frequently travel to the oil fields in Alaska (Prudhoe Bay), I can attest that fabric will "snap" if hung up wet.

Freezing doesn't really dry the fabric. Freezing and wind does. It's called "sublimation".
