My nephew brought his bass rig over to get it ready for actual WATER. I got his engine purring, but he has rot issues. We got rotten deck, rotten bolsters, rotten everything.
He bought a gallon of poly resin and cloth.
(WE WILL NEED MUCH MORE,AND LOTSA PLYWOOD).
My question is, can poly resins be used over epoxy resins? We are also unsure of original, but believe it to be epoxy. Boat is a 1989 Bayliner Cobra bass boat.
Thanks in advance for any and all replies :)

you can put epoxy resin on top of polyester resin, but you can't put polyester on top of epoxy.factory built boats are generally made with polyester resin, because it is alot cheaper. if your nephew's bass boat has a gel-coat, then it is almost certainly polyester. if you use polyester, it will stink up the whole area for days. if you use epoxy, wear a respirator, and don't get any on your skin.

I agree with joe, I recently rebuilt my transom (a marathon job). I have a few friends in the fibreglass industry and they all advised me that ordinary resin will not hold to existing epoxy, yet expoxy will adhere to old ordinary resin. Also epoxy adheres better to timber. I found the sanding and the resulting dust was a nightmare. use a good respirator. Hope this helps, terry

Thanx, guys.Judging by the way the old laminate has pealed-up,and not adheared to the wood, I guess I can conclude that is is Poly original.
I did a transom once......ONCE! Yuck, what a job! And it was a small 14foot boat. I swore, I would never do it again.
